1966 C4 modulator valve.

Modulator valve had a small leak, and decided it was a good idea to change it out. The one that came out had a white stripe and threaded in. The one the parts counter gave me has a green stripe and is threaded. Will the wrong one cause issues ....shifting at the wrong speed etc...Or damage bands by not shifting correctly.

Cheers

Re: 1966 C4 modulator valve.

The modulator delays the shifting depending on the engine load as measured by the engine vacuum. That's why it will shift at a higher RPM if you stomp on it compared to gently accelerating from a stop. Green and white stripe are pretty much the same (average non-performance car). The green stripe ones are supposed to be adjustable. Try putting a small flat blade screw driver in the vacuum hole end. You should be able to feel detent clicks if it is adjustable. You can make small adjustments to the upshifts.

Re: 1966 C4 modulator valve.

I have installed the original white stripe modulator and it works fantastic...The instructions also state that do not turn the screw in more than 4 full turns or it may damage the diaphragm. I had a leak on mine and also think I found the mysterious vacuum leak...lol Now the car shifts better and also idles better than ever.

Depending how long he diaphragm was leaking the plugs may be a bit oily.

Engine vacuum will suck fluid from the transmission and burn it.

Re: 1966 C4 modulator valve.

Where the vac. line hooks there is a screw inside the hole, flat head or a allen, you need to turn it counter clockwise for earlier shift

Turn it in to delay and firm up shift, screw out to shift sooner and soften. may need to adjust the kickdown linkage at the carb. The adjustment screw on the mod. valve is accessed by removing the vacume line and inseting a small reg. screwdriver.

This tread was started June 2013. I am quite certain he has corrected everything.
