500hp build?

Looking to rebuild my C4 to handle 500hp.

- I started pricing out parts, and Broader Performance (http://www.broaderperformance.com/) seems to be the cheapest option.

- Above is a link to pictures of the items I was looking at purchasing. That's $1300, which seems like a lot, and overkill for a 500hp transmission. Also I can purchase their 800hp unit for $900 more, and that comes with a manual valve body, and supposedly other mods. I feel like I'm going overkill on this, which isn't terrible I suppose, but this is only going into a car that will (eventually) have a 408w. Any items I should take off that are unnecessary at this hp level?

- To save $300 now, I opted to just install the above shift kit in the current valve body, as a valve body is easy replacement, when I install a manual valve body at a later.

I also was looking into all of the mods to do to a C4. I read into a couple of the sticky posts, but a lot of the links are dead, and the only mod that I could truly read into was the welded drum. Updated links, and/or description of the mods themselves, and what they do would be much helpful.

Re: 500hp build?

Have you thought about this:https://www.dynamicracetrans.com/c4-...tary-p-63.html, or https://www.dynamicracetrans.com/c4-...ary-p-64.html? Just a thought. I hear you on spending an insane amount on a trans to handle the power, but also think about what your time is worth. Sometimes the extra time taken to save a few $$$ doesn't add up, and sometimes it does. The upgraded planetary will definitely increase your power handling as would an up-rated input shaft (forgive me if that was already on your list). You could go with the TCI super rebuild which would get you around 450 hp power holding cap., along with an uprated input shaft, and the better planetary, I think you would probably be beyond what your 500 hp requirement is.

Re: 500hp build?

I want to build it myself, not because of money, although that is a factor, but because I enjoy it. The Dynamic Racing Transmission's roller 3 pinion front planetary is more expensive than broader's. DRT's 6 pinion front planetary is more expansive than Performance Automatic's 6 pinion. From what I hear, no one has ever broken a 3 pinion, it's the failure of the thrust washers. PA's 6 pinion is about twice the cost of Broader's 3 pinion, which I was on the fence about purchasing or not. I do have broader's 3 pinion, and hardened input shaft in the quote. I contacted broader a while back asking about 600hp, and was told all I'd need was their Front and Rear ridged bands, forward and direct clutch upgrade kits, and their C4 overhaul kit. I added a few more items into their list. I also priced out the TCI kit vs the Broader kit, and TCI was more expensive. Assuming we're talking about the same kit that is.

Re: 500hp build?

Okay, I ended up talking with some people, and ordered Performance Automatic's 6 pinion roller planetary. Summit has black friday sales, so also grabbed PA's hardened input, and the transgo shift kit. PA26418 (the planetary) costed me $424.11, the kit appears to include both sun gears, and the forward clutch up, all machined for a roller thrust bearing. I figure the $200 more than Broader's sungear, and roller 3 pinion, was worth it, and hope it pans out so. I will be buying broader's roller rear planet, as it appears he is the only seller of such. I thought of making my own, but for this car I'd rather not have to pull the trans in the event that I had messed up. I will hold on to both of my planetaries and look into rollerizing them myself, for a future build.

Although no one is replying to this thread, I plan on keeping this updated throughout my build, in hopes of someone offering their own opinion/advice.

Re: 500hp build?

You've doubled up on the 6 high clutches and the drum comes with clutches if i read right.

The P.A stuff is good for sure but in saying that the 3 gear rollers I've not found a HP limit yet

Look at also getting the broader #9 roller

You need to ensure whatever the sun gear is has correctly sized lube feed to the gearset.

The rear planets rarely wear but the Broader one is machined ready to go.

The forward frictions @ 500HP you really dont need reds

You got the pump + extension bushes are essential but will need to check all others

There are other mods also necessary to the pump etc that requires doing .

Re: 500hp build?

Yeah, I hadn't purchased the Broader list yet, was debating between the new drum with pre-installed clutches or just clutches and old drum.

I blew up a roller planetary in a 700r4 once with only a 427 stroker, different design, yes, and maybe I'm just a worry nelly, but, already have it purchased and no one else has posted yet. So no worries I suppose.

I'm buying the #9 roller. Unsure if I should do the oil mod though, since it's a bearing and not a thrust washer. Will probably consult Broader with that question.

I do realize I said 500hp, but with already doing the other upgrades, I'm just trying to make it as stout as possible. Hence the red clutches.

All the bushings look new in my trans, even the #9, but was original, even had the dipstick plug in the pan. Even so, I was going to replace them, and broader had the cheaper bushings, readily available, that's why they're in the cart.

Will also be doing the pump check ball mod.

Only mods that I could find were the #9 thrust washer oiling, front pump check ball, and welding the front drum. I can't weld the front drum, as I don't have the machining capabilities after welding it, and will just end up with the stock drum, since the only aftermarket drum that I can find is Billet, and $500.
