Ford C-4, which direction do one-way clutch springs go?

I have a '74 C-4 that's going to together and have stumbled across a conundrum involving the one-way clutch. Some publications state the spring tip near the roller faces the outside of the case and the other end points towards the inner race and other publications state the opposite. Both also state there will be damage to the trans if not installed correctly. Which is correct?

I always fit them , end to the outside at the roller , to the inside at the retainer

Just to make sure I understand, the portion of the spring near the roller faces the outside of the trans case and the other end will face the inner race?

One more question. In feeling the outer ring of the one-way clutch, should it have a smooth, continuous ramp-feel or will it feel like it has an impression towards the end/raised portion? This non-smooth feeling seems to be pretty uniform on all ramps.

Cancel the last question about the ramped outer race and the second spring question. It's supposed to be like that and I understand the placement of the springs.
