66 C4 - Input Shell (on forward part of gear train) - Fitment problem

Hello,

I am rebuilding my 1966 C4 transmission and running into a problem. The Input shell (with the sun gear in it) does not mesh well with the reverse high clutch. I have about 1/8" gap where the "teeth" engage. I have triple checked that all clutches, thrust washer etc are installed properly and aligned. Two people from other forums with the exact same problem as me have stated that the top of their input shells were "crushed/bent/indented" and they bought a new one and it fixed the problem. I removed the sun gear and the thrust washer under the sun gear (on top of the input shell) and my shell is indeed "dented", but this looks factory to me. It is a perfectly symmetrical recessed section that is ~.030 deep. The thrust washer is also ~.030 deep so to me it seems like is supposed to be there. And for it to get dented there, I just don't see how. One other thing I learned (from a thread on this forum) is that earlier C4s had a 3.25" input shell overall height, whereas later years (and mine) are 3.125". I am guessing that those people that "fixed" their issue may have gotten a hold of the longer shell which made up the gap. The transmission I assume was running before I got the car but I have never driven on it.

So all that said, I am not sure how to proceed. It is possible that what I have is normal, but it just does not look right and everyone is saying the teeth should engage all the way.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Re: 66 C4 - Input Shell (on forward part of gear train) - Fitment problem

That is not right . Along with the different sun shells must have the matching drum to go with. I'd say there's a mismatch there

Here is a document listing some differences ..

Some anomalies of the first version of C4

1) No bushing in front ring gear
2) Snout of front planet not machined
3)Front splines on output shaft aye 3/4" long
4) Sun shell is 3-1/4" long
5)Direct drum is 2-7/16" long
6)Front servo pin bore in case is smaller than later boxes
7) Front servo does not have a letter on it and lettered servos will not fit
8) Bolts in rear case to retain sprag cam have 1/4" heads

Later Versions:-
1)All had bushings in front ring gear hub
2)all had snouts on front planet machined
3) Output shafts through 1969 had 7/8" splines - After 1969had 1" splines
4)Sun shells are 3-1/8" long
5)Direct drums are all 2-11/16" long
6)All cases have a standard larger bore servo pin hole
7)All lettered servos will fit all large bore cases
8) Bolts in rear of case have 5/16" heads

Are we confused yet ? There are numerous changes over the years not listed above , but which can bite you if you are not aware of them.

Tall guy ,
I have some extra sun shells and I could send you one. You're "just up the coast" LOL Send me a PM with an address if you want one.

Thanks Greg, my parts seem to measure up to the later version 3-1/8" shell and 2-11/16" drum. I will try a new sun shell.

Well that is very generous of you! I will send a PM.

Of course I am the same "Tallguy" from VMF you helped out. My motor is back together with a "proper" timing chain deflection (if not slightly on the loose side but I am OK with that). I'll update that thread soon.

Yes I remember. We fixed the engine so now we can fix the transmission. I do all my own drivetrains so this is just the next issue in line LOL. I'll get a part in the USPS this week.
