Hello,
I am rebuilding my 1966 C4 transmission and running into a problem. The Input shell (with the sun gear in it) does not mesh well with the reverse high clutch. I have about 1/8" gap where the "teeth" engage. I have triple checked that all clutches, thrust washer etc are installed properly and aligned. Two people from other forums with the exact same problem as me have stated that the top of their input shells were "crushed/bent/indented" and they bought a new one and it fixed the problem. I removed the sun gear and the thrust washer under the sun gear (on top of the input shell) and my shell is indeed "dented", but this looks factory to me. It is a perfectly symmetrical recessed section that is ~.030 deep. The thrust washer is also ~.030 deep so to me it seems like is supposed to be there. And for it to get dented there, I just don't see how. One other thing I learned (from a thread on this forum) is that earlier C4s had a 3.25" input shell overall height, whereas later years (and mine) are 3.125". I am guessing that those people that "fixed" their issue may have gotten a hold of the longer shell which made up the gap. The transmission I assume was running before I got the car but I have never driven on it.
So all that said, I am not sure how to proceed. It is possible that what I have is normal, but it just does not look right and everyone is saying the teeth should engage all the way.
Thanks in advance for any insight!
