Beefing Up Spring Eyes

While I have this thing apart and open, anyone have any good ideas, or experience beefing up the spring hangers for these CALTRACS. I have heard of welding up the seams on un-body cars.

All the metal is great, thats why I am not hacking or ladder baring the rear, its all original steel, no patches, no rust - unusual - but still 40+year old. Be nice to gusset or strengthen up the leaf spring attachment points.

Thanks

I don't know if this is what you are looking for or not but my comp engineering frame connectors tie right into that area..In fact the bolt for the front spring eye goes right through the connectors..

Re: Beefing Up Spring Eyes

Thanks, thats a good one, but I was looking particularly up in the pocket where the front spring eye hardware/assembly is spot welded up in there, and there are a lot of seams that could be welded if it makes it better. Not sure if there is value added in that or it would weaken/detract.

My subframes connectors dont tie in, but now I have seen yours, nothing a piece of steel and spool of wire wont fix. I like it.

Thanks.

Re: Beefing Up Spring Eyes

The best way to brace them is to tie into your rollbar from the top side of the floor.
Using an angled brace like shown with the frame connectors on each side to a plate on the top side with a bar going to the rollbar from there. That way the spring lifts on the rollbar spreading the load thru all your tubes and car.

Re: Beefing Up Spring Eyes

Since it sounds like you are going to be beating on the car at the strip, weld as may of the spot welded seams as you can on the car. It will make the car structurally stronger which will further benefit it at the track.

Re: Beefing Up Spring Eyes

Yeah, its going to get beat on. Cant see the fun of having one if your not going to thrash it once in a while.

Thanks, I have been eyeballing how to get the roll bar down to the spring eye mounts/or at least tied together, this sounds good.

On the seams, just start welding them, not building up a lot of heat? Thanks
