Unfortunately I struck out. I looked at what I have left and only have a 70' reverse rail left. I've been building toploaders for resale and used the rest of the parts up, keeping the more desirable 65-66 big notch stuff for myself.

All may not be lost though as I compared David Key's photos to yours and came up that you have the 1970 Type 5 rails-look at how wide the machined flat area is between the notches in the top photo below. Compare that to your middle pic above. No other type rails are big and flat like that.




David Key also sells the correct interlock pin according to his web site.

Exactly, this Toploader is connected to a 351W. All '73 Mach 1 Sprint came out with the Windsor engine.
About the interlock pin, I was thinking about the type 4 or 5. If you tell me 5 I trust you and will order it from David Kee.

I will come back for some news later.

Hello,

I should receive the interlock pin next week. I cross my fingers.

At the meantime I found another Toploader, I just check it and it's a close ratio. No tag ID, cast number is C5AR-7006 D, so should be from 65/67.
The main shaft is shorter, so the tail house the same. This tranny is not complete.
Missing the top covers bolts 8 short and 2 longer, tail house bolts, drain and fill up plugs, and the short heavy spring, his blunt point detent and the screw on the top.

Type 2

If you have some of those parts, I will be interested.

Hello,

The tranny is rebuilt with the interlock pin. It seems to shift well. Was as well a training to rebuilt it.
I need now to order parts from David Kee then I will do the final and hope working rebuilt.

I will come back as soon as the trans is reconnected to the car.

I need as well parts for the other Toploader.
Looks like it's the same setup as this picture:
What kind of detent is that on number one? (set screw), and number 2 (side bolt with short detent spring)? As soon as I know that I can order parts for both of my trannies.

It you rail set has the two "hatchet" detents shown in the middle, then you have the David Kee type 1 setup which uses 3 round detents. All 3 of the round detents are the same so your missing 2 will look like the detent shown on the bottom of the photo. The locations of the hatchet detents are important so don't mix them up with the round ones during installation

The short springs are all the same length/strength. One long spring from the later type rail sets can substitute for the bolt/short spring used in position 1 circled in the photo. The cover of the toploader then becomes the upper stop.



FYI, Type 1 is normally considered the most desirable setup (probably due to the hatchets having the most contact with the rail which helps ensure positive engagement.) Because I like them I have the type 1 rails and detents in all of my own personal toploaders as they can be used (as a complete set) in all cases up to 1973. Later cases can even be tapped for the bolt circled in the photo as long as you also use the short spring.

Actually the exploded view from DK site helped me cause it's the setup with hatchet detent.
So you are right, again. I read somewhere that this setup was the best made for our Toploaders.

I order for the early tranny:

2 short detent spring
2 round head detent
1 set screw
1 set of top cover bolts

Then to rebuilt the Mexican one I order the road race rebuilt kit.

Hope in 2 weeks the car will run...

The Toploader is almost done, all gears engage very well. Now need to install the tailhousing bushing, install all gaskets, then I will be ready to put it back to the car.
Come back while I finish.

After installation of the tranny, problems to engage all gears except the reverse. I could use it only if I was abusing of the shifter.
Well, I decided to remove the tranny again, and after a while I changed the shift tabs, drill the 3/4 with a new hole, reverse tab came to 1/2 gears.
And now it works perfectly.

Drilling the new hole in the tabs will make it physically harder to shift the gears. It won't hurt anything though. You might consider getting a new shifter. A Hurst Competition Plus would work perfectly.
