Re: raceway park
Went there every Sunday back in the early 60's to race my 57 BelAir, 283/220 hp/3 sp Hurst/4:11 rear. I'd open the exhaust plugs when I got there, but I'd leave them open that night when I went back on the street. I'd also keep the hubcaps off and the class writing on the side window: HP/S. Never won a trophy, but I beat my friend's 348/250 Impala convert.
Another friend was doing very well in his class with his 62 Corvette until somebody got concerned and dumped sugar down his gas tank. Had to get towed home.
Saw a MoPar 413 wipe out all the cars in it's class, so they did a stunt. They set up a Corvair at the 1/8 mark, both cars started from a standstill, and the MoPar won.
Drag racing was so popular back then that an airport strip in NY State (Montgomery?) sometimes ran four cars at a time. Some tracks were open on a weekday evening for "grudge" matches. No trophies, just a chance to legally race your buddy's car at the strip.
