All Ford heads are more work than they are worth! HiPo 289 heads are the same across the board as normal 289 heads,they just have spring seats and screw in studs.351W heads have huge combustion chambers,over 289 heads,need domed pistons to get any compression back.All late model 302-351W heads have small valves and screwed up exhaust ports!!! Why waste your money on stock junk,by good aftermarket heads[no chinese junk],and be done with it!! ROY

Back in the early 90's I played around with some Windsor pieces and created a 306 that ran dish pistons and still had plenty of thump, it definitely didn't have the old 8:1 mushy thud going on. I had an engine shop assemble my short block which was from a 1982 Bronco I was building to tow my bass boat, the heads that came on this motor had about the largest chambers I'd ever seen on a set of stock Windsor heads and it had double relief flat top pistons. A friend of mine had a set of small chamber heads he had harvested from a late 70's T-bird so I chose to run them wanting the extra compression. My engine builder looked at what I had and warned me against using flat tops with the small chamber heads saying my compression ratio would be to high for pump gas. I would have figured running the dish pistons the compression ratio would have been a wash and the motor would have sounded exactly like it did before I rebuilt it which was kind of mushy. It hit noticeably harder with this new combo. It just goes to show you, you never know what you can create with the right combination of Ford OEM pieces........
I've read Hot Rod Magazine most of my life and back while Jack Roush was still building NHRA Pro Stock engines the folks @ Hot Rod challenged him to build as much horsepower as possible using nothing but Ford OEM parts. He basically built a 302 Cleavor motor with a factory performance camshaft, the best flowing Cleveland heads, intake, and carb he could get for this combo. I want to say he finished this project and tweaked and tuned it on the dyno to around 600hp. You just never know what you can do with these parts..........

Other than chamber size there isn't a whole lot of difference between the 289/302 heads..The 69/70 style early 351W heads have bigger valves but are still no where near as good as an entry level aftermarket head..

A late 70s T bird head would still have pretty big chambers..

I went the other way.

I put 302 heads on a 351w.
gt40p's

Yes t-bird heads would be the same as 302 heads in the 70's
(77-79) 69cc 1.78I 1.45E

A set of GT40 heads work If you can get them for free! it is not practical to fix a set of stock heads because machine work is to expensive! Back when shop rates were 20 bucks an hour it was worth having work done.
1000 dollars don't get you much now!

As several have said, by the time you get the heads cleaned and machined, screw in studs, new valves, springs and retainers, you will have spent enough to get some new aluminum heads.

I did port a set of 78 t bird 302 heads once and picked up about three tenths over a bone stock set.

The best iron heads for a 302 or 351 seem to be the iron GT40s or the GT40p heads from a late Explorer.

The iron gt40s, with a supporting cast, took a second of the quarter time.

I have a used set of 69-70 Windsor heads, professionally ported ( 235cfm intake flow) studs, guides, guide plates, S/S 1.94 x1.60 valves , flat tappet springs / retainers. These were on a road race engine and have not been abused or blown up. They could be run as is or have the valve job freshened. $600 plus shipping. The owner is changing classes to one that allows aluminum heads is the only reason for the sale.
