351 Cleveland 4V Top End Build

This is the top end build of a 351 Cleveland that is going in a road race ’67 Galaxie. The bottom end has been built and the engine was waiting for a set of open chambered 4V heads that were treated to screw in studs, guide plates, new valves and guides. The heads were also milled, and a radius valve job was performed:



Fel Pro gaskets were used:


The block to head mounting surfaces were milled to clean up any imperfections, and to square them up. The mounting surfaces were cleaned with alcohol and a clean paper towel:


The head gaskets are retained with guides that are pressed into the front and the rear of the block mounting surfaces:




The head gaskets are marked with the word “Front”, and the cooling holes in the gasket must match the hole on each side of the block. The word “Front” must be on top with the word “Front” towards the front of the engine. Do not rely on the printed pattern on the gaskets to be the same on both sides of the engine, because when they are installed properly, sometimes the gaskets printed pattern will be oriented the same, and sometimes they will not:




The heads are placed on the block being careful to line up the holes in the head with the guides in the block:


The head bolts were cleaned and the threads were lubricated. The bolts were placed in the holes and torqued to 95 Lb. ft. of torque using the factory torque sequence:








With the heads torqued down, a pair of old valve covers were placed over the valve area and the block was painted with Ford Corporate Blue:






The cam is a Ford Motorsport hydraulic grind, and the lifters are a set of Rhoads anti pump up:


The lifters were submerged in a container of oil and the plunger depressed with a push rod to fill the lifter with oil:




The lifters were then liberally coated with cam lube before being placed in the lifter bores:




The intake manifold is an Edelbrock Torker 4V:


The intake gaskets are glued to the head using 3M weatherstrip adhesive:


A bead of RTV silicone was used on the block ends in lieu of the cork gaskets:


The intake manifold is placed on the engine and the manifold bolts are torqued to the factory specs using the factory torque sequence:




A set of Lunati roller rockers will be used:


The Garret Machine tall valve covers are magnesium and super light. Does anyone know anything about Garret Machine, as I bought them on Ebay?


The car is still being built, so installing the engine is some time away, but it should run great and be very reliable. The first race the car will compete in is the Big Bend Texas Open Road Race in Ft. Stockton, Texas.

I believe Garrett Machine is in Oregon state. They specialize in Ford work. They advertise in the National Parts Peddler and, I think, National Dragster.
I like those valve covers. I believe they are pretty expensive new. Did you make a good deal on E-Bay? I am interested to see your roadrace 67 Galaxie. Please share some pictures when its done.

Garrett Machine Home Page I have seen some of their stuff. Very good quality. Haven't heard a bad thing about them.

Not on this one, the 180's will need the firewall to be removed, and this car will not be that wild.

Just curious..... You do not show how you determined proper PR length. Nor do you illustrate amount of preload on your hyd lifters. I do know that is a VERY important part to setting up your top end. It has a dramatic effect on cranking compression as well. I only know as I'm there now with my Canfied headed 347. Good Luck & BTW, I love the huge intake ports on those heads!

If you look closely, you will see that there are no pushords installed. I am saving that information for another tech article. Sreiously though, we didn't have pushrods at the time the pics were taken.

Aren't you a little concered about the engine providing enough torque to pull the weight of a Galaxie in and out of turns? It has been my experience that 4v heads can be "dead players" on the street in a heavy vehicle, in fact I have only seen a few people make them work to their potential on race cars and those were filled in with epoxy, good luck.

Its all a matter of gearing. How deep you go in the rear end and how many you have in your transmission. The more of you have and the deeper you go the better.

Oops.... My bad. I didn't look close enough. It will be interesting to follow though,as I'm currently trying to sort out my issues while trying to learn at the same time. Gotta love those clevelands!

Looks good Tom. I think it would look really good in a white mustang that is sitting outside of your shop. Just a thought...

Ahhhh, Cleveland myth number one. I have two 4V Clevo powered vehicles that will beg to differ about the "No Torque Myth".

Yep, the 30+ year old stereotype. Just for chuckles, these are a few highlights of the most ridiculous claims I've read lately. This is also happens to be a '67 Galaxie 351C swap. I call it the blind leading the blind.

...the rebuilder said i could easily upgrade to a 4v engine. all i would have to do is purchase his 4v aussie heads and use the intake 4 bbl manifold + carb. he didn't recommended it if the car is for street use. he said i would definately need a supercharger (blower?)...

...he mentioned the if i were to put closed chambered 4v heads that the car would idle like a heavy duty hot rod at low rpms. he said that the car will need to rev 1000-2000 rpms to generate enough low end torque to get the car moving from a stop. he said that a blower will eliminate that hesitation and produce torque at the bottom end...

...this an old guy that i went to. he has a good reputation with rebuilding any engine. he's been in the engine rebuilding business since the 70's. he knows what he's talking about. the builder was also giving me all these options to make the car either race like hell or just be streetable...
