New 63 Fairlane Owner with some questions.

So I just purchased a 63 Fairlane two door with an automatic transmission with a 221 V8 and just have a few questions.

I'm not really familiar with the 221 V8, can you make any kind of power with it? My Ford engine experience comes from the FE390 in my 65 Galaxie. So I'm new to the SBF world.

If the 221 isn't all that great, what would be a good direct drop in engine for the car?

What kind of automatic transmission did these cars come with? I know it's not a C4 or a Cruise O Matic, but is it worth keeping if I move up to a bigger engine?

Any information would be helpful. And I am really looking forward to this build. I hope it is as much fun as my galaxie was.

Re: New 63 Fairlane Owner with some questions.

the 221 is not much of a power horse. direct swap would be a 63-64 260 or early 64 289. Both of these engines are 5 bolt bellhousing blocks and have a 6" engine mount bolts spacing. If you want a late 64 289 or later 302 block, you only need to change the top brackets of your engine mounts. The later blocks use a 6 bolt bellhousing and have a 7" engine mount bolt spacing. So if going with the later style block, a transmission with a 6 bolt bellhousing is required.

The "Five Bolt" 289 block is your drop in special for sure. If you're going to rebuild an engine consider building that block as a 331" stroker. I guarantee you that extra 110 cubes will be much appreciated, with a block that is the same exterior dimensions.

Re: New 63 Fairlane Owner with some questions.

Thanks for the replies. The car is due to arrive on friday, so I am trying to get as much info as possible. I plan on getting started with this straight away so the information here is immensely helpful.

So I guess with this being my second classic Ford, I think it's safe to say I'm firmly in the Ford camp now.

....Still not changing my user name though.

Re: New 63 Fairlane Owner with some questions.

Are there adapters that will adapt a 6 bolt block to a five bolt tranny? Or is it even worth considering.

Should I just try to hunt down a good c4 and go with that instead?

No adapters. C-4 is a perfect fit for a 6 bolt 289 or 302, and they're a drop in motor also

You would be better off (if not performing a dedicated restoration) to go with the later six bolt components (IMO). The 70/ C4 is a much better trans.

Re: New 63 Fairlane Owner with some questions.

I'm not really wanting to do a by the book restoration, I just want something that will eat my Brother's 64 Riviera for lunch. I was thinking a 302 with a C4 and a 9 inch rear end. Not sure what gear ratio I want, but that's all in the future. Right now, I'm just happy to get my hands on a two door for a fair price. Everything else will come later.

I think you guys are right and that is the road I think I will take.
