2 Speed Rear End?

long ago i had a 57 fairlane that had a column shift 3 speed and a push/pull cable operated overdrive. i think it was a 2 speed rear axle but at the time was very young and didn't pay any attention to it. my google fu doesn't seem to be working and hoping someone here can point me in the right direction for some info about these rear ends.
thanks.

Re: 2 Speed Rear End?

What you are describing is the Borg Warner 3 speed overdrive transmission.

Here is a good description of how it worked.

+1 Very common back then. No "production" modern era passenger car (since the Model A era) had a two speed rear axle. Mercury tested one for the '69 Cougar but it never made it to production

Re: 2 Speed Rear End?

This could be a Hone overdrive. it was cable operated, as I recall. The company is still in business today.

Re: 2 Speed Rear End?

that hone-o-drive is very cool, to bad it's way outa my budget.
