I plan on switching my manual steering to power.I know of two places to get the conversion kit.CPP and Borgeson. Has any of you guys done the conversion on your car? I checked with CPP and found the kit I needed, but the service revues were rather poor. Borgeson doesn't make a full kit to fit, but sell all the parts to do the conversion.Any advice would be of great help. Roger

I am in the process of having a shop change my '64 Futura to electric-assist steering. I originally wanted rack-and-pinion but they said electric steering is a better option. The conversion will cost about $2K for parts and labor. When I get the car back in about two weeks I can let you know which parts they used and the results.

I got my car back today and it is a big difference. It cost about $3200 in parts and labor, but based on a short test drive it was worth it. I will do a longer test drive soon and provide more detail about the parts that were used.

I bought the Boregson steering box and pump. I installed it . The first pump was loud and whined all the time. I bleed the system ,but couldn't get it to stop whining. I sent it back. The replacement pump made a tapping sound when the engine was running. All the time both pumps made a loud sound every time you turned the steering wheel. They both leaked fluid out the cap when you drove it.I sent the replacement pump back.I sent the steering box back today to be replaced with another of their boxs. I hope this will solve the problem. It is a pain in the a$$ taking the steering box in and out.The one good thing I can say is the car drove great with the power steering. It was so nice to park and it drove real nice.I will be happy to have this project completed.Roger

Got the new box in yesterday. I installed it with a pump I had laying around. It works great. No leaks,no noises,I took it out for a test drive. It's working just as it should. After all the work,I am very pleased with it. It is so nice when I need to back up and park. No work at all now. When driving on the streets it has a bit firmer feel than the old stock style power steering. Even with the smaller steering wheel and the wider sticker tires it is easy to turn when stopped.Roger

I also have a 65 Falcon Futura I went with the borgeson gear box again just having all kind of problems with steering linkages every time I think it's good lay on my back to install it somethings wrong. As of last count I have one complete idler arm and bracket assy, plus two of the lower part of the joint, two center links and no idea which is correct, and 3 steering sector arms and all three are different one is original Falcon V8 manual steer one was from Borgeson and the other from Dearborn Classics. Not sure if it's the center link or the steering sector. Who has short term memory problems? Now what were we discussing? Seems every picture is different and I even have a reprint of the Falcon/Comet Manual. Have to try some pics and see if we can sort it out

I'm new to this forum, so don't know if I'm replying the right way. I'm new to all this computer stuff but not with the falcon. Drove to school back in the 70's. I restored a 63.5 Sprint back in 1998 and made the mistake of sellin it. Got a 64 Futura hard top now with what looks like factory power steering that leaks like a sift. Soon as I get the time I'm guttin it and going with manual steering. The power steering makes parkin better but feels like a boat on water when crusin. It also gets in the way with headers and such. I guess old age and old school is kinda the same. Keep us posted with your progress. Thanks

Bamabrown,With the Borgson box the steering is firmer that the stock style steering. At high speeds you still get a good firm road feel and is much easer to park that the manual steering. My car is so much nicer to drive now. I have the Cpp front tube control arms and the coil over shocks, in the rear I have a custom 4 link with the pan hard rod and coil over shocks. The car drove really nice with the manual steering but with the new steering it is at a new level. The only thing I need is AC.Roger

thanks again. Will be replacing the upper control arms next week. Prolly a stupid question (I did this same job years ago on the 635 sprint) but how do you gain access to the zerk/gease fittings once the arms are fitted to the car? everything is gonna be jammed up. I think I'll poke out some holes so I can lube the upper arm shafts. Looks like I can lube the ball joints with no probs. The crap on the car now does not have any grease fittings and prolly why i'm rebuilding the suspension in the first place.

I put 45 degree zerks so I could squeeze in haven't done 1st lube but hope it works a couple I had to redo because I turned to much trying to adjust to right angle had to take back out and I'll tell you right now I couldn't drill and tap to small so I got some left hand drill bits and if you can get just the right bite it will remove them

thanks again. I have short straight, 45 and 90 degree fittings on hand and will try them. Piss poor design as far as clearance goes. The ford shop manual says to gain access through the opening in the upper control arm. "reach through opening in upper control arm" (section 21-3 Fig.2-Lubrication Chart-v8 engine). I cant see it happening. After the rebuild I'll post my remedy.

Hey BrewBoy and thanks. I postponed my front end work. Got an invitation for a local Christmas parade / car show and took the car. Prolly going up on stands this week. The pic you sent is great. If I ever find out how to post the pics I'll send them. Are your ball joints greaseable? The ball joints that came with the a arms are threaded for the zerk and I will use them as well. I should be way better off with the new parts. What's currently on the car did not have provision to grease the joints are the shafts. As a side bar.....Using the car in the parade made me a believer in the power steering as well. Gonna replace/repair what I have a stay with it. Works good but leaks.
