Power steering 1965 Falcon

I plan on switching my manual steering to power.I know of two places to get the conversion kit.CPP and Borgeson. Has any of you guys done the conversion on your car? I checked with CPP and found the kit I needed, but the service revues were rather poor. Borgeson doesn't make a full kit to fit, but sell all the parts to do the conversion.Any advice would be of great help. Roger

I am in the process of having a shop change my '64 Futura to electric-assist steering. I originally wanted rack-and-pinion but they said electric steering is a better option. The conversion will cost about $2K for parts and labor. When I get the car back in about two weeks I can let you know which parts they used and the results.

I got my car back today and it is a big difference. It cost about $3200 in parts and labor, but based on a short test drive it was worth it. I will do a longer test drive soon and provide more detail about the parts that were used.

Does the steering return to center after a turn? I've heard that's an issue with electric steering.

Re: Power steering 1965 Falcon

I bought the Boregson steering box and pump. I installed it . The first pump was loud and whined all the time. I bleed the system ,but couldn't get it to stop whining. I sent it back. The replacement pump made a tapping sound when the engine was running. All the time both pumps made a loud sound every time you turned the steering wheel. They both leaked fluid out the cap when you drove it.I sent the replacement pump back.I sent the steering box back today to be replaced with another of their boxs. I hope this will solve the problem. It is a pain in the a$$ taking the steering box in and out.The one good thing I can say is the car drove great with the power steering. It was so nice to park and it drove real nice.I will be happy to have this project completed.Roger

Re: Power steering 1965 Falcon

Got the new box in yesterday. I installed it with a pump I had laying around. It works great. No leaks,no noises,I took it out for a test drive. It's working just as it should. After all the work,I am very pleased with it. It is so nice when I need to back up and park. No work at all now. When driving on the streets it has a bit firmer feel than the old stock style power steering. Even with the smaller steering wheel and the wider sticker tires it is easy to turn when stopped.Roger

Hmm, I didn't even notice, I think I drove hands-on-the-wheel thru the turns out of habit. I'll check it out the next time I drive it.
