Your Very First Decal

Our hobby is one that is loaded with brands, opinions about brands, passion about brands, and arguments about brands. Sure there is the obvious top tier stuff like Ford vs. Chevy vs. Mopar. If you've got a preference, Ford I hope, then you know the backstory as to why. I sure do.

Move down the automotive hierarchy to the performance aftermarket and you'll find plenty of brands that you grew up with still holding their own today. Most likely you have an affinity for certain ones based completely on their merits of quality, performance, and endurance. For you that might be an Edelbrock or a Flowmaster. Whoever it is, if they've given you an unexpected increase in horsepower, hit that perfect exhaust note, or delivered on whatever quality attribute you were looking for, then you're loyal because of it.

The brands you stick with now, may not be the ones that impressed you when you were younger. Even as "grown-ups" however, our attraction to a brand may still be less sensible than performance measures and more about nostalgia or reminiscence of youth. A lot of business is done in the hobby today soley on the "cool factor" which is easily tied to reminiscence. Think Offenhauser.

The potential of the nostalgic effect came to mind this past weekend when I tossed my 4 year old boy a Thrush Mufflers decal. We installed new mufflers on the Torino on Sunday. Upon returning from work on Monday and while sweeping the back patio, I noticed the decal found a home.

Remember your very first decal, what was it? Still using those products today?

Re: Your Very First Decal

Geez thinking back 50 years ago STP comes to mind . Seems like you could get those stickers at any gas station or parts place all you wanted for free. Thought they looked cool stuck all over the bicycle... WYNNS (spelling) was another sticker I remember as a kid. Wish you could still get the Thrush mufflers and side pipes they had back in the 70's ...

Re: Your Very First Decal

My first sticker was purchased in 1974. It was a "Hurst Shifter" decal and it came with a new 3 speed shifter. I still have and occasionally use the shifter and I also still drive the GMC truck that I put the shifter in (although I now use a 4 speed.) The sticker is long gone.

This shifter was a custom order at the time. Moving the shift linkage from the column to the floor was one of the best mods that I have ever done to the old truck.

We owned a gas station when I was little and I remember sticking the STP stickers on everything...Don't think I ever used their product but I thought the sticker was very cool..

Re: Your Very First Decal

64Post,

the thrush and Clay Smith are similar... If memory serves the Clay Smith bird had a bent beak... went under the name of "Mr Horsepower"and is still being marketed as vintage racing gear through Summit... I would have to get out a Summit garage catalog to be sure though

By the way... cool beans on getting your kid involved there Jon. Start em out young!

Re: Your Very First Decal

My first sticker I remember as a kid was for US Keds sneakers, it was drawn Ed Roth style with an arm hanging out of the shoe grabbing a shifter. Do they even make US Keds sneakers anymore?
Mike

And by the way the 61 Sunliner I'm restoring has Thrush stickers on the quarter windows and was sporting rotted Thrush glasspacks on the exhaust when I took it apart. They have been on there over 30 years.

Re: Your Very First Decal

My first was a "Cherry Bomb" decal on my 68 Stang to go along with the glasspack. Here's a pic of the Mr Horsepower peckerwood.
