Announcement from FordMuscle.com

1 Attachment(s)
FordMuscle Fans,

We are proud to announce to you today some exciting and necessary changes at FordMuscle. We are partnering with the good folks at AutoForums.com to manage and continue to grow what has become one of the largest Ford enthusiast websites online or elsewhere. Effective today, AutoForums.com will own and operate the FordMuscle Forums, under the URL fordmuscleforum.com (and fordmuscleforums.com)

Many of you are well aware that FordMuscle began in 1999 as a small web-publication created by hobbyists with the focus of providing technical content to the Ford enthusiast. Soon thereafter we created a forum and this combination of content and forums resulted in a community of over 170,000 unique visitors worldwide. Many of you have watched and helped us grow along this eleven year span. While we always strive to present to you the best possible website with the least possible disruptions and inconveniences, in the background were the challenges and costs of managing such a large community, hobby, and business. In the past several years we have struggled with keeping up with server loads, hackers, and advances in web technology. Frankly, we have been bothered by the fact that we just can't deliver the best experience that you our loyal readers deserve.

As with any business you must look for ways to be effective and efficient, and that often means realizing your core competency and finding others to do things you aren't so good at. AutoForums.com excels at running automotive enthusiast forums. They are on top of the technology, they have faster and more secure servers, and more people to manage it all. Therefore we are confident that our decision to put the FordMuscle Forums in their hands is a good one. It will also allow us to get back to our strengths, which is bringing you exceptional Ford related content.

While there will be slight changes, and yes change takes a little bit of time to get used to, it does prove itself for the better (those of you who remember our forum upgrade a few years back can attest to that!) The FordMuscle staff of Chirag, Jon and Chris will still be around, we'll still be accessible, and we'll still be involved, but our focus will be continuing to build FordMuscle.com while our friends at AutoForums.com will build fordmuscleforum.com.

Sincerely,
Chirag Asaravala and Jon Mikelonis

Re: Announcement from FordMuscle.com

Greetings!

Just introducing myself to you, My name is Phil, Iím a Community Director for AutoGuide.com. So you are all familiar AutoGuide manages a number of different online communities. Currently I personally manage all of our sports some motorcycle, some import car and a Tractor Forum, and will be joining the Ford Muscle Forum Team.

What are our intentions?

We bring reliability, support and the infrastructure needed to ensure that the community will be around for years to come. Itís our goal to work with the staff of Ford Muscle as a team to help provide the resources and required to give this community a broader reach, to attract new members to better the overall knowledge shared in the community.

Will leadership change?

Continuity is the focus here, Your Admins and Mods work very hard to keep the walls and the roof up in this place we are just here to make sure the lights stay on. Every community is unique and should always be respected in that regard. You guys have established your own unique rules and regulations and a strong reputation that is carried by all of this and itís important that we maintain this level of integrity.

What am I here for?

My primary role is to work on the technical aspect of the site and work with the existing staff. I will check in to make sure regular maintenance is all taken care of and keep things running smoothly from behind the scenes and soon have the site running smoother and faster then ever before.

I do look forward to getting to know you all and this unique community better.

Philip

I am always glad to hear that measures are being taken to increase the security of any information what i have stored on the internet. I can certainly understand turning over the technical aspects of hosting a website over to people who specialize in it and have a reputation for reliability and security. The thing that attracted me to this site was the awesome articles on practical things like EFI, and such that are specific to Ford. So now that you are free from what I would consider a huge responsibility, I expect you guys will need some time to decompress but after that, we will expect more technical articles on how to do stuff that we want to do. I have a hundred questions right now, like is the price of annual membership going to change? How about free someday? Are you still going to benefit if the site grows and maintains i.e. do you still have financial interest in it? What can we expect in the future for Article? Where do we submit our requests? I got lots of questions, but I'll stop and welcome our new partners. Welcome Autoforums.com. We are family here. You are now part of what we believe to be an elite group enthusiastic and creative individuals. I hope that this move works out great for everyone involved. Welcome.

From what read, it seems only bad things happen after a website gets bought out by Autoforums.

+1

While I understand it becomes a economical decision to get away from managing a huge online community (time, money, hassle, etc), the core "community" seems to evolve/change or even dissolve when a large corporate entity takes the helm of good grass roots forum.

Oh well, I hope FM Forums retains some of the good ol' boys that put it on the map.

Congrats and condolences.

I think things will work out fine! I have seen other Ford sites become BETTER when help steps in, like with Ford Trucks. Still arguably the best truck site on the web... This site should do it for Ford classics in general. Keep it professional, keep the spelling and grammar in check, and all will be well... There is no better auto than a Ford!

There are some improvements that could be made no doubt. I will not pass judgement or inject any negativity. There are plenty of people on here who do that so well already.

This is a great site and change is inevitable. I look forward to enjoying this community for many years to come.

Just remember, Obama said CHANGE WAS GOOD.
I have found out when things like this happens things go down hill.
May be wrong, time will tell.

Don't burn your bridges to Chevy. and Chrysler forms yet.Are there any Chevy. or Mopar blacksliders out there?

I am still not sure what all the negativity is about. I am not here to change or remove anything you already have in place. Autoguide is here to help build this forum and grow it more. We have all the infrastructure in place to help the site run faster and more efficiently not to mention I am here to help the staff get along with running this place a little easier so they can spend more time on content and less time on up keep.

Re: Announcement from FordMuscle.com

Does this mean more advertisements? Do we still have to pay for articles?

administrator 07-29-2010 08:12 PM

Re: Announcement from FordMuscle.com

since I did not see a multi quote button on here and rather then multi mutli posting I will try and answer all the questions I can now.

Advertisements: Ford Muscle already had a healthy amount of ad placement. From what I can tell we have shifted some of this around and there may be a few less ad banners then you had before. Ads keep the lights on here so they will never go away but there will not be so many that you cannot navigate the site. I understand you may see ads occasionally for companies other then ford. This can happen for a variety of reasons and the main one is if ford is not as active with its online ad budget they will not have the same reach as other car manufacturers through google ads.

Being logged out: The site was moved to a new server so if you where logged in it would have required you to log in again, no biggie but if you have trouble with your account please report any bugs directly to me.

Paying for articles: as far as I can tell the articles are from the main fordmuscle site and not from the forum and will still remain on there. This is more to do with Chirag and Jon as the editorial site still belongs to them.

simpler way of posting: If you have trouble or something you feel should be improved upon please send me a PM with the details so I can better understand your needs.

There is more reading I still need to do in this thread to organize and answer your questions. I am exited to start working with the mod/admin staff to make some positive changes on the technical end of the site and hopefully within a short period of time the negativity will subside and we can all go on to enjoy the forum.

Yes, as Philip noted, articles outside of www.fordmuscleforums.com are still under the ownership and management of FordMuscle. The membership program is still in place. We've always believed that in-depth tech content cannot be given away under a growth business model, at least not all of it. We'll be developing a mix of fresh "member-based" content as well as "free" content in a new format.

Re: Announcement from FordMuscle.com

So let me get this right.

You will be keeping the magazine part of the site and keeping the ample profits from that.

You sold off the forum part of the site and they receive the ample profits from traffic from the forums?

And I am guessing you still have admin rights on the forums and maybe even a slice of the advertising pie?

At the very least you can now say the forums are not taking up your time and you can maybe produce complete articles now eh?

Re: Announcement from FordMuscle.com

I am very disappointed to hear about autoforums taking over this forum. I am a firm believer in small business and grass roots community sharing. These kinds of take-overs lead to corporate control of every facet of our lives. Have you listened to the radio lately? Every channel plays the same thing because they are all owned by clearchannel. Even our loved hot-rodding magazines are all owned by primedia. I could give you countless examples. Well, I for one, don't buy those magazines, I don't listen to the radio (besides our local university stations), and I will no longer be participating in this forum. In addition I will be removing myself from this forum. Understand that I am doing this with hesitation. Fordmuscle.com and its members have provided much needed assistance with my hobbies, and has taught me so much. Sadly this great wealth of information is no longer suitable for me.

I truly hope by other than ford, you mean speed equip vendors and not GM, TOYOTA and Blue Pill Ads... :frown:

If you start advertising trash to make a quick buck, you have lost my interest.

You build something up over time through the contribution(s) of member posters and then sell it off for a quick buck. The American way... :tdn:

The main ad that has been on every page yesterday and today is for Dodge trucks. Imagine that, The industry leader in trucks is Ford and they are now running ads for Dodge on a Ford only site....nice move. I don't think many users on here want a Dodge truck. If we want a truck I'm pretty sure it will be a Ford. They are also running an ad for BMW cars on here. Sounds like the partys over. It looks like they have just dumped this forum into their normal ad rotation.

Re: Announcement from FordMuscle.com

Is the price of annual membership going to change? How about free someday?
We don't foresee offering premier labor intensive content for free unless ad revenue justifies the costs. As we have always said, if you do not find value in the content, there's no obligation to support FordMuscle.com with a membership. It's our obligation to deliver the value first.

Are you still going to benefit if the site grows and maintains i.e. do you still have financial interest in it?
Yes, we still own and operate FordMuscle.com which consists off all non-forums content, the brand, and merchandise.

What can we expect in the future for article?
We are developing our strategy and content platform.

Where do we submit our requests?
With regard to non-forums content...[email protected]

Non-Ford automotive ads?
Our ad networks have always run Non-Ford and Ford automotive ads. I agree, it seems logical to run only Ford ads. Perhaps the logic is that Ford believes they already have your attention, the competition doesn't.

Re: Announcement from FordMuscle.com

There has been a lot of talk about the ads on the site. Mikelonis has pointed out that there has always been ads for other companies then Ford on here, it may only be because of the announcement that you are noticing this more then before.

If the biggest complaint that you are encountering is that you are seeing an ad for Dodge I dont see how this is so offensive compared to what you are served on most other forums on the internet. There is only speculation fear mongering that there will be ads for blue pills and free iPads and I have yet to encounter any of this.

As I have said before there have always been a lot of ads on this site and normally for autoguide.com sites we prefer to keep the ads to a minimum for members to focus on growing the brand of the forum and attracting more supporting vendors and showcasing the supporting vendors. Since to members here content is the most important thing on the site having postbit ads (ads between posts) can distract from reading the content. We have removed the postbit ads from members though they will remain for guests only.

I never could see paying 19.95 for a membership here when there is so little new content provided by FM. Most articles are written by the members of the forum that FM gets for free. The members are doing most of the work. There's some dude with FM that writes about his red Ford truck in Reno and that's nice but I don't know anyone that cares about him swapping out his old Ford bench seat for a bench seat with a console from a Chevy. This is Ford Muscle, not Ford trucks. This site has lost it's way. I remember when the guy that started this site (can't remember his name) would be a Sac raceway all the time with his fox body testing all sorts of stuff and then write about it. I haven't seen him in years or anybody else from FM for that matter.

So for 19.95 I get access to a few new articles now and then and a pretty steady flow of articles from the members (thank you members) two decals to help you advertise your site and a sticky backed plaque to put on my car, no thanks. If I'm going to help you advertise your business, you should be paying me. You guys have done a poor job with the main site, so the only reason I come here is for the forums, which you have now sold.

To set the record straight, a large portion of the articles you find in the Tech Exchange were performed by contractors paid for by FordMuscle.com (dazecars and F15Falcon). The others we're incentivized through the one-of-a-kind program not seen anywhere on the web where contributions are rewarded with merchandise and cash.

Rick Devito (FATNFAST) was also a paid contractor who managed most of the program by communicating with contributors and working diligently to format, edit, and track what you find in the Tech Exchange.

To conclude it simply created itself with no monetary investment, labor, or creative effort, is a 100% false assumption.
