Fuel pump too small?

Hi everyone, my first post on the forum. I have a 1971 mercury cyclone that I just finished building. She has a 351 Cleveland with a comp cams 284h camshaft, trick flow heads, headers, Weiand intake, a street demon carb, pentronix ignition, stock mechanical fuel pump. She starts up OK and when the car is not under load will rev up. Once she’s in gear if I put the throttle down she sputters and doesn’t really go anywhere. The only thing I can figure is that she’s not getting enough fuel under WOT. Does this seem like it’s the problem but does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thank you, Rick

Re: Fuel pump too small?

Could be a lot of things. If you suspect a fuel issue... Remove the rubber line that connects the metal fuel line to the fuel pump, and blow compressed air back to the tank through it. It should blow FREELY. If you feel a restriction, the line might be kinked. If the 'sock' on the fuel pickup in the tank is mostly clogged, you will either blow the crud out of it, or blow it off the pickup. Both are good results. lol

I'd also check the fuel filter before worrying too much about the pump. Make sure it is plenty big, flows well, and isn't clogged.

If you do end up needing a pump, Carter use to make some nice high volume STANDARD PRESSURE units that were really good, and also affordable. Don't go with a high pressure pump, or you'll need to install a fuel pressure regulator.

Good Luck!
