"new" C6 won't "brake" in 2nd

Hi all. Finally got the Gal licensed and on the road, but I noticed in the first few test runs that I get no engine braking in 2nd gear. On the upshift, there is a bit of a tiny pause from 1st to 2nd, while going into 3rd is quick. Downshifting to 2nd the engine drifts down to idle speed even I'm doing 60mph. Loose band or something easy? On the upshift 1-2, I'm not a 100% sure its actually changing gears sometimes. Is the ratio close on stock gears? This trans is fresh although it has been sitting around the garage for a couple years. Has a transgo stage 2 kit, a few other things like R servo. Should I not drive it? It has about 230 miles on it now. I picked it up in Louisiana (performance automotive) so I can't take it back now anyway.

Don't know about C6 but the old Cruisos it's sometimes difficult to tell the shift from 1st to 2nd and is at a real low speed. 3rd is noticeable but still smooth or supposed to be at around 15-20mph. But this is the old cast iron cruiso not a C6 but think that a C6 would be pretty much the same.

I have a mild stall convertor in my c6 and it has very little back pressure under the 2800 stall. Just a thought.

Re: "new" C6 won't "brake" in 2nd

Is this the first C6 you've had? The possible reason for no back pressure when dropping into 2nd might be that it doesn't have a rear/back pump or whatever that is. Like you can't push start an older automatic ford but you can push start an old chevy becuase of the dif in the trans and back pressure.
Been so many years since I started my Impala that way. But think you get to pushing them and when you get close to about 30 mph you drop it into drive to cause the same effect as popping the clutch to start it.
It might not be designed to "drop down" like that and is a safety mechanism. Like I said, don't know much about the C6. I know my old cruiso will drop down but have never tried it at that speed, be worried about messing it up. What about if you have it in 2nd, does it not go into 3rd?

One of my trans died because it never wanted to shift to 3rd, I thought I was going around 40 when it would finally shift. Well I found out it was more like 50 when I had my sis following me. No speedo. Then one day it went whiirrrrrrrrrrrrrr SNAP! and after that could only be driven til the trans got hot then it would just quit. Took it in to get it rebuilt and the torque converter was twisted on the shaft.
Another trans, had to put in neutral and then back to D to get it to shift. Reverse is not a good thing at 60mph. LOL

Re: "new" C6 won't "brake" in 2nd

Just to finish the thread, I had the wrong modulator. Changed it out for one with a bit higher vacuum requirement and adjusted it and I get all three gears now. So all is well at this point. Now to get the aluminum interior trim worked over so I can finish the interior. I really like automatics, but they have always a bit mysterious. Someday I will get one and just work it over with a good manual at hand. Isn't that the way phobias are treated?

I thought you treated phobias with heavy doses of alchohol.

Sounds good to me!! Cause the trans might just stay a mystery but alcohol, who cares, it works everytime.
