Hey Mr. K.
Welcome to the FMF. And to get you started off right: It's Galaxie, not galaxy. Is it a 500? LTD? Or XL?

Also, there are a number of really nice publications with GREAT information that will familiarize you with your new Gal. They are generally available at Auto Zone. They are:

"Super 60's Fords: The Inside Story Of The Most Powerful Fords Ever Built" by John Smith

"Ford Performance: Includes All Modern Ford Performance Engines" by Pat Ganahl

And probably one of the most helpful things that you might consider getting is a "1969 Ford Shop Manual". They are generally available on e-Bay.

You have a garage or shop in which to work on your Gal?

It's your vehicle and you can do as you please. By the time you're finished, you will have come to realize that Galaxies are living creatures and as such have feelings and emotions about what you do with and to them. You can tell that they like what you're doing by how well they cooperate with your efforts. If they don't like what you're doing, they have all kinds of nefarious ways to let you know. Be sensitive (or else).

Although in the present economy, a picture is now worth only two hundred words, it is pretty much appreciated by everyone to have lots of JPGs of your Gal and what you're doing. Pictures will get you lots of attention around here.

You might consider posting the information found on the Warranty Plate. That's always a good place to start.

Sounds like a plan. Will be watching your progress with abated breath.

Hope this finds YOU doing well.

Yes, it is a three link with panhard bar.

There are threads on the board that discuss suspension mods and upgrades on the 65 and up, as well as, air bagging these cars. Use the search function and be sure to post plenty of pics as you progress. It sounds like a real cool project.

The warranty plate should be a sticker on the edge of the drivers door. It will have info on the body type, engine, trans type, rear end and gearing, colour and trim codes and serial number. There should also be a VIN tag visible at the base of the windshield, on the drivers side, that will give some of the info. Be careful during tear down because, if it hasn't been torn down before, the factory build sheet may still be hidden behind the door panels, or under the carpet, or under the seats.

The XL will have the LTD front end, with the hide-away headlights, and the sportsroof, which is ford speak for fastback. The sporstroof will have long buttresses which stretch the sail panels almost the full length of the quarter panel, with a fairly vertical rear window. They look extremely cool, but I'm a little partial to that model. The high back buckets and console shifter are also very cool.

Sheet metal is very difficult to find for these cars, but patch panels are available. If your car does not have a 9" rear end, it will have the WER type, which has an 8 3/4 ring gear, and probably pretty tall gears. If you want shorter gears it may be just as well to replace the whole rear, and the 9" would make sense.

At least you're in out of the weather.

That the little aluminum plate with the all the stamped numbers on it that is generally found on the Driver's Side Door. It will have a bunch of numbers that tell a LOT about what your Gal was originally. For instance, in the fifth position of the VIN, it will, if the 351W engine is original, have an "H". There are also numbers that delineate what Transmission, Differential Gear Ratio, Body Style, Color, Trim, and etc. with which your Gal came. All those numbers are translatable. BTW, how to translate those numbers can be found in the Shop Manual.

That information is also probably available on the Warranty Plate.

Re: new guy with a galaxie/project thread

best news ever that it has the 3 link with panhard. that will make it so much easier to bag.

i dont have the car at my house, its still in my friends driveway but i do know it does not have the hideaway head lights. and the shifter is on the tree, not console

we have the same setup. i have a 66

basically, use a Universal air suspension Aerosport bag on the front, and run a good shock (im gonna use a QA1) through it to factory mounting location. you can use S10 cup for the top of the spring pocket and put a hole in the middle for the shock.

rear, ist just normal. weld some mounts and be done.

Re: new guy with a galaxie/project thread

that sounds easy enough. i am very familiar with air ride. i built custom air setups for mini trucks and street rods for 4 years.

on the front i plan on just running some slam ss bags, universal cups for top and bottom, unless i dont need cups on the bottom. then in the rear i plan on welding a flat plate on top of the mount that the spring used to sit on (on the axle) and then mounting the bag to that. then for the top, well i will have to see whats up there.. slam bags in the rear as well. ill be redoing the 3 link with new bars that ill make myself to be a lot stronger and well newer. super pivot bushings. limit straps front and rear. ill either be running no shocks (never did on any of my other bagged vehicles) or i will be making custom mounts for front and rear for them

so you plan on running a coilover bag setup? i had that on my current car (infiniti g35) and loved it. handled great.

Re: new guy with a galaxie/project thread

yeah. i had the bag laying around from my last car, so i figured id see if it would work. the QA1s are an aggressive shock that has adjustable dampers, so should e a decent match for the bags. i had em on a couple of my cars (y33, RF1, UCF10)
