Talking Things that make you say Hmmmm.......

Hey guys! Does the possibility of taking the front suspension/ steering from a late model Crown Vic (04-06) & swapping front ends on my 66 4 door? I've seen it done on a 69 F-100, but I don't know if it can be done on my Gal. As always- all wisdom & advice is greatly appreciated!

It's a good design. It'll require significant frame surgery. And you'll need to check out the track width.

Re: Things that make you say Hmmmm.......

Hi Alberatzi,

May I ask what sparked an interest in doing this? The reason I ask is that we have a 2004 Grand Marquis and a 1993 Grand Marquis and yes while the 2004 has a bolt on front cross-member for the steering, suspension and brakes, it would take quite a bit of modification to fit it to the 65-68 frames of the galaxies. And that's assuming the wheel width is close matching between the two. Not to mention other tidbits that need to be calculated and possibly adjusted which will affect handling; like roll centre, Ackerman angle, etc.

And if I'm honest, I've had more people comment on how our 1993 rides much nicer than our 2004. The 2004 ride quality is noticeably harsher. In the end we're going to keep the '93 and sell off the 2004.

OK that was my 2 cents worth

Cheers,

DesertXL

Re: Things that make you say Hmmmm.......

This was discussed a few weeks ago, but for 63-64 Galaxies. While it is popular with the F-100 crowd and very easy there, it wouldn't be so easy on a Galaxie. Not sure about the width on a 66, but they are several inches wider than the 63-64 which would require modern offset wheels and even then might be too wide.

Cool Re: Things that make you say Hmmmm.......

That's kinda what I figured. Anyone know where there are any reviews for the Scarebird FDB conversion? This sounds like a simple & effective conversion, which is several hundred cheaper than the standard conversion kits.

Re: Things that make you say Hmmmm.......

If I had my 66 to start all over again, I would go with the 03+ Crown victoria front. I have an 04 crown victoria lx sport with the factory HPP package and it handles just add good as my 06 mustang GT did. If you have any sort of fab skills, it's not that hard to swap. Yes there's math involved but in the end i think it would be well worth the effort. Plus you could go right to the local parts store to get anything for it. The front complete cross member can be had for ~$200 if you look around.

The Scarebird conversion is easy to do and works well. You might be able to go cheaper with junkyard spindles etc but since I'm not junkyard savvy I went Scarebird. The kit includes a shopping list so you won't have to guess at what discs and calipers etc to buy. I got all my stuff from Rockauto and seems like the whole brake project including the dual reservoir master cylinder might have been about $500. It's been a few years so my memory on the pricing could be pretty fuzzy...

While you've got the system open it would be a good time to change the rubber hose at the rear as well.

Gas Monkey Garage makes it look easy. If anyone wants to try it on my '69 F100 let me know!
