loose steering wheel on 67 Mercury

I was messing with my steering wheel having to replace turn signal assembly. After putting it back together I have play in the steering wheel being able to push it from side to side 1" or so after I tighten everything back up. I have taken it back apart and see the shaft sits somewhat loosely inside.

I can't figure out why i have this play now. Thoughts?

Re: loose steering wheel on 67 Mercury

the bearing is still attached to the shaft. When it seats back in there is play as the area it sits in has 1/4" space all the way around.

All my stangs and falcons have a center cone that the spring rests on that centers the top bearing to prevent slop. The cone is steel and slit down one side.
