4 Speed Auto Conversion Options

G'day all...
I've hunted around the forums and haven't found what I'm considering. I have a 66 with a 390 and C6 trans. Are there options for a bolt on replacement trans that would give me a 4 speed setup? My revs are a little high at highway speeds (3000+) and I believe I have 3.55 rear end.

Any insight or critisims are appreciated.

D

Re: 4 Speed Auto Conversion Options

there's no automatic overdrive trans that will bolt up to to a FE.

if your pockets are deep enough, there are other options-
gear vendors o/d
custom bellhousings (modern driveline)
adapter kits (bendtsen's)

Nerrad- Check with Lentech Automatics (Canadian co.too) for an adapter to mate your FE to a Ford overdrive trans, either an AOD or the latest & greatest 4RW70 electronic controlled ford OD trans.
Or, if your present trans is strong & you love it, as above go to gear vendors site , gives you all the info you need on how the GV works, simply pull your tail housing & bolt on the GV unit giving you OD & will also "split" each gear giving you 6 forward speeds.
The GV units are allot of fun , believe me

Try this place. $850 will get what you're looking for. I put an aod trans in a Torino with a 429. They have adapter kits for FE and Y blocks.

Re: 4 Speed Auto Conversion Options

was looking into this option a while back for my 67 with 390. It isn't economically feasible. There is a plate you can buy that converts the bellhousing bolt pattern, but it is $700 by itself. Then you have to find a 4-speed OD trans that will handle the torque of the 390 without shattering. A Crown Vic trans is just not enough. Then you'll have to fabricate the drive shaft.

I'm saving for an aftermarket overdrive that attaches to the back of the 3-speed. It will give you the same kind of highway revs and still handle the monster's torque.

Here's the GearVendors offering. It is a little pricey.

Edit: you could also try a Hone-O-Drive and not have to change your drive shaft at all. They are rated to 1000 HP and 1000 lb.ft.

I'm sure there are others out there. Haven't looked in a while.
