4 speed standard shift

I have a standard shift 4 speed with two bolt patterns on the front. Will it bolt up to 1960 352 bell housing? Will there be other problems making it work?

it should work for what you need,some bellhousing are diff. with the wide bolt pattern and some have the close bolt pattern some bellhousings come with both patterns. ralph h.

I agree that it should work.

You might find that you have a couple of small issues though. First the input shaft may be too long and bottom out in the back of the crank. Just do what Ford did after a thorough verification and wack off the required amount from the pilot bearing part of the input shaft so that the shaft still enters the bearing, but does not bottom out against the crank. If the toploader is out of a 390 car, it might already be the correct length.

I need to update this, but the photo should give you an idea of the length differences I am talking about:





There "may also" be a difference in outside diameter of the throwout bearing snout, with the 60 bellhousing hole being slightly smaller. If you find this, simply have the snout lathed down the required amount to "just fit" into the bell by a few thousands of an inch. If you have an old manual Ford snout from 60-64 (even a 3 speed,) perhaps it will be a direct swap.

The transmission is a large input top loader from a '66 Galaxie 428. I am thinking of putting a stroked 352 or 390 in a custom car. The car is yet to be determined. Thanks for your help. Ron W

You are going to have a couple of problems.

Like was said below, the bearing retainer is going to have a larger OD on the later transmission, so you'll have to machine the bellhousing to fit.

Second, your later toploader will have both bolt patterns, but the wider one is stronger and the early bell won't support using it.

Next, a lot will depend on what you plan to put it in. The bellhousings were fairly model specific because of the z bar mounts.

Another problem will be that the big input trans originally used an 11.5" clutch, but that won't fit in the early bellhousing so you'll have to find a smaller version.

And last, there is only 1 big input clutch fork still made, for Mustangs, so if you put it in a Galaxie they have to be modified to work.

Bellhousing won't need to be modified. But the transmission front bearing retainer will need to be machined down to fit the '60 bellhousing. Use the inboard holes on the transmission to bolt up to the '60 bellhousing. And as BH107 said you will have to modify the the throw out fork to fit the larger t.o. bearing.

There are 11" clutches available for the 1 3/8 input. Not sure if they will fit in an early FE bell.

Thanks for the heads up. I am getting what's left of the car which was an Interceptor special. I think the transmission, bell housing, clutch, linkage and flywheel are all there. It's hard to tell for sure till it gets pulled out of the trees. The block is there but the heads are not. I'll see what I really have when I get it home. Ron W

The car is yet to be decided. I have a '51 2dr that I'd like to customize. I also have a few others. I haven't made up my mind yet. For now, I'm collecting parts. Ron W
