Re: Brighter 64 Galaxie tail lights

Hi Norm,

It's good hearing from you. I'm glad you responded because these are the same LEDs you mentioned installing in your car in 2016. Maybe I just got a bad lot. Hopefully the pair I just installed will last longer. We'll see. Thanks again for your help.

Re: Brighter 64 Galaxie tail lights

Hi again Gary !

I think, and sad to say, this seems to be the nature of the beast with LED's right now. At least ones that are made 'off-shore'. And like any of that stuff, you get those 'bad lots' as you mentioned. We've all found that to be true through-out all the parts we collectively buy for our old cars, right ? :/

Since 2016 I've gone around and replaced multiple bulbs, in our house too I mean..... and have found some flickering among them. As our local home centers get in more of them, with more options and styles, and better pricing, maybe this issue will improve ?

I've also considered adding a third brake light to mine ....have you ? Most of our cruise friends have universal style ones on their cars, and admittedly when we follow them (we're usually towards the back of the pack anyway), I like how they add a nice extra piece of illumination ....especially on those bright sunny days we occasionally get here --this year anyway, lol. :p

Well, in the meantime, I hope your current pair of bulbs live long and prosper !

Norm

Re: Brighter 64 Galaxie tail lights

Hi Norm,

I wanted to respond to your question about installing a center third brake light. I really like the stock look and feel of my car. The only real upgrade I've done to the car is radial tires and the LED tail lights. I enjoy the smooth ride of the radials and the LED tail lights provide decent visibility. Prior to the LEDs, the tail lights were useless in daylight. To that end, I have not planned to install a center brake light. I hope I'm not casting caution to the wind.

Anyway...great hearing from you again. Have fun.

Re: Brighter 64 Galaxie tail lights

No sweat Gary !

We know many hot rodders and 'purists' alike --all have their own style ......as to how they interpret their own "feel" .....using your word which fits really well.

I mainly was curious, that's all. Our cars are 'drivers' although some in our group are done to a high level, while the rest of us have 'drivers' in the other connotation, lol. The main common denominator is that everyone seems to be keen to adding items that allow the rest of the cars on the road to better deal with us. And to boot, we're all MSRA members, which offers a free 23 point car inspection --a nice extra something to help those owners who aren't that car savvy, for example.

I've added disc brakes (to avoid said peeps better), plus relayed headlamps to aid in seeing & being seen better at night too. But, if you were to look at my car you'd notice a mostly stock looking car with 'mag wheels' --that's it. (underneath is a whole nudder story, lol)

So I like the stock look and feel too, but I also like the security of knowing it's seen well, and if not, I've got the brakes to woah it, ha ! :p As far as what YOU need on yours, I'd say go by your gut .... Third brake lights aren't required by our safety inspectors, ...... things like that they seem to leave up to the individual.

Anyway, cruise away and happy tail-light shinin' to ya :p N

I got a pair of Sylvania Zevo leds for my 67 tail lights and definitely worth it. Ive used the same brand in my other car for a number of years. Love them...money well spent. I did buy interior leds via mail order in the winter so i will be interested to see how long they last.
Leds are very sensitive to voltages...red leds are usually 2.2V or so...which means if the little circuit board doesnt provide a stable...and more importantly low enough voltage, they will burn out instantly. Better circuit board quality = longer life.
