Hello,
I am looking to replace my worn out old brass radiator and step up to an aluminum. I have found some universal alternatives and some way overpriced direct fit replacements. Champion currently carries one for a 65 small block which won't work, but it looks like the one for a 64 would fit if I cut the sides of the factory core support which will give me 28" of clearance. Has anyone else found a better alternative?
I picked up a Champion radiator for my 57 Ford and it cools just fine here in Az. My 61 Starliner came with an aluminum radiator when I got it. Don't know if it's a Champion, but it also cools it.
I talked to Champion and they felt like the better fit would be one for a 67-70 Mustang or Cougar and would work with minor modifications. The part number is CC2379 and is saddle or bracket mount.

Thats the one I bought for my 66 with a 460. I also picked up the shroud and twin 12" fans w/ relay kit too. Good looking radiator. Haven't tried it out yet. Still trying to get my lower hose situated, but may have found a solution today!
That is awesome! Thanks for the info on that radiator and the mods on the saddle mount. I will plan on getting the CC2379 from Champion and make the mods as you did which is as close as I will get with fitment.
I wanted to let you know that the Champion 2379 was a great choice for my 65 Galaxie. I only had to make very minor mods to make it work. All I had to do was move the driver's side saddle mount on the car 1" to the outside (see pic). I also made some very simple L-brackets for the top mount with some padding so I don't scratch the aluminum. I did have to open up the factory shroud (core support) with some pliers, but I didn't have to cut anything. This is one to pass on to others with a 65 and a big block that is affordable at $200.
I believe the 67 is a saddle mount and your core support opening is bigger so it just might. You will have to fab up your top bracket, but that might be the hardest part. The radiator I bought keeps mine nice and cool with a 400HP engine so I am sure it would be good for you. I would call or email Champion and they would be able to guide you in the right direction if you have certain dimensions you are looking for. I spoke with Geoff and he was extremely helpful with core sizes and dimensions.
I also used the Champion for a Mustang. I also needed to modify the saddle mounts for the bottom and the top. I also had problems finding a lower hose. I ended up getting a Gates with the bend and the right size for the bottom, but I had to use a hose adapter to change the size on the radiator end. The hose at the radiator end was larger than the radiator but the adapter fit inside the hose and adapted it to the right size for the radiator. i drove the car for 2 years before selling it and I had no issues. I will say getting the bottom hose on the engine side was a bitch since the fuel pump is in the way. No room to work, but I finally got it on and the clamp tightened. I sent all my records with the new owner so I can't help with part numbers. But it can be done. By the way, I also used a dual fan set up without shroud and I never had any overheating issues here is Texas with 100+ degree days.
