Classic Car Insurance

Looking for some input on who you guys use for insurance. Currently I have generic insurance on my 66' - which I understand will quickly screw me if something happens. While switching my main car insurance I looked into hagerty, my first application was immediately declined. So I reviewed and found a few mistakes and lowered the annual mileage from 10,000 to a more accurate 5,000, and it was approved for "review". Well they called me today and said that 5,000 miles doesn't make since if I just drive it around town and challenged me on it, had the car since 45,000 miles, owned it for 3 years and it now has 58,000. SEEMS LIKE A GOOD NUMBER TO ME. Anyway the women said she disagrees and with that shes going decline my application...

I've had a hell of a time with insurance on this thing and am looking for some input. This is the first time I've been declined due to mileage, every other time it has been my age - 26.

I'm not looking for anything crazy, this isn't a priceless car to me. I value it around $11,000-$13,000. If I wreck it and damage it more than that value I just want the value of the car and move on, I don't expect anyone to spend $30k to fix it.

Any suggestions?

-Zig

lower the mileage and call back. can they check? call another company. Progressive, Grundy, American collectors, Hagerty,
Farmers. There seems to be many. Just read the fine print, record your phone calls and ask questions. 26 though??? Might be hard to get inexpensive insurance. Good luck! let us know who you go with.

It was through progressive they third party Hagerty. Seems to be a common theme I checked a few other big guys and they do the same. Going to call around, geico seems to own their own.

They can check when you resubmit, the woman on the phone saw that I had originally applied for 10k miles and changed it to 5k. I'm going to contact hagerty directly - this was a third party underwriter.

I'm not too concerned about the cost being low, I just want to make sure I have my bases covered. I've always had generic coverage on the car. My fear is, it gets wrecked - insurance values it at $1k after a wreck - I get a grand or a totaled car and still owe on it - I have GAP coverage that should cover that also, but none-the-less.

Ziggy, I'm using J.C. Taylor for my '65 Ranchero, which I got through my Farmers Insurance agent. I wanted year-round insurance, because I drive mine a bunch. There are no mileage limits, agreed value ($12K on mine), $300K liability and $300K Medical Payments & Uninsured Motorists coverage. Cost in my home state of Oregon is $151 per year.

The trick is that you need to have another, regular car insured through Farmers, which we do.

I went with American Modern, they want lots of photos but once you're in it is $250/yr including liability and $12,000 claimed value. Of course I have not tried to collect anything yet, so who knows, really, if they are worth a crap..

You may have to get an independent appraisal, by someone acceptable to your insurer. I would expect most automotive insurers would have a stipulated, or agreed value option for classic and collector cars. In this day and age you'd think that info would be on each company's web site. The real kicker will be what each company has for restrictions on use, like not for going to and from work.

Same here. I had a very similar situation that Ziggy experienced with Haggerty. I told them that I might take a trip to Florida to see my elderly father. Since he doesn't have a garage the car wouldn't be locked inside a building, so they declined me. As if I'd ask my old man to move his car out while I was there. He lives in a gated community, all the residents are at least 55 and walk their under 20# dogs together when their not at the community center playing cards or shuffleboard.

I have a classic car policy through State Farm. I need to look it over again to be sure everything still looks as I would like. I had to take the car to the local office and they took lots of pictures. Agreed value, full coverage and no hassles. I'm like you, I like to drive my car, but since my ODO doesn't work who knows how many miles I've put on it.

I'm surprised there wasn't more reply's to this thread. I just use State Farm along with the daily drivers.

State Farm won't insure projects. Must be a finished / driving car.
They also had me bring the car to my agent so he could see it in person and take photos
We both agreed on a fair insured value. Couple grand more than what I paid for the car.

He submitted the request to their collector car dept and they approved it.

Mileage restriction is like 7,000 annually
Full coverage costs me about $28 a month I believe.

No complaints
