Question 64 Galaxie Split Engine Crossmember

Recently I purchased a 64 Galaxie with a 460/C6, that was a former drag car out of Vegas. I really have no idea of it's long term history, but it is a tubbed and spooled car with all the driveline hoops and whatnot you would expect in a car that had been used on the track. It has been civilized to a point, and is back on the street.

However, when changing the oil this weekend, I noticed the crossmember under the motor had been sliced cleanly through. This is the crossmember that the motor mounts attach to. At first I thought it was broken, but the slice is too clean and straight. From the front of the car looking rearward, the slice is at about the 5 o'clock position, before the crossmember make the 'U' under the oilpan. There is about 1/8" even gap in the tube. The edges are roughened, but it is just too clean and straight to be a crack the spread to a full break.

Is this some sort of super secret mod for drag racing? I cannot for the life of my figure out why someone would do that. I have come up with a couple ideas just how to fix it, but I was wondering if any of you had seen something like this. I am new to the whole thing.

And just what are you referring to? I asked a question about this crossmember on the Galaxie USA FB page, but I made no reference to it here.

Re: 64 Galaxie Split Engine Crossmember

Please post some pictures of the crossmember. What ever the origin, it would seem like not a good thing to have a cut, or broken crosmember. It could have been broken on the drag strip. More runs down the strip could tear it apart.

I will get some pictures of it tonight. It has been put to pasture. No more dragstrips, hell, I don't even do burnouts. For $500 a tire, I will let someone else do the burnouts.

A buddy here at work was thinking the same thing about the wheelie, but who knows. I know the rear of the frame has been hacked and rewelded and patched and repatched numerous times. I need to just replace that bit. That is one big car to lift the front end tho. I don't think this engine has the snort for it.

The motor is a 460, bored out once, Comp Cam(supposedly a mutha thumpr, but I can't find which one, exactly), roller rocker conversion, 9:1 comp, it does have DOVE heads, for what that is worth. It came with a Holley 950 done by Pro Systems, but that was just too much carb for the street, so I swapped that out for a 750.

I have replaced the fuel cell with a tank, rewired the dash so I can (kinda) tell how much fuel is in it, and see the gauges in the dark. Heater and all was stripped out, so planning on an AC unit here in near future, and a windshield wiper motor at some point.

No, surprisingly. The lifters were collapsed, but all the pieces and bits were retained within the lifters, so I just replaced all 16, dumped in some VR1, and ran it. It was missing on those two cylinders tho, odd, huh?
