Need Advice

I thought I had made this post already but I canít find it soÖ..

HI Folks. Iím new to the group and not quite a Galaxie owner yet but I hope to be soon. Thatís where you come in. Iíd like to get your opinions on the vehicle Iím looking at.

I recently retired and am hoping to fulfill my dream of owning a vintage/muscle car. I know my way around a car, especially old ones lol, but Iím not a gear head or anything.

The car is a 1968 Galaxie 500. It has been garage kept. The nephew of the original owner is selling it so I would be the third owner. It has a 390 Motor (rebuilt) with a 4 bbl and a C6 Transmission. The motor is not the original. The C6 is and it has had a valve body installed although I donít yet know the details on it. The motor and transmission have 18,000 miles on them, the car has 128,000. There is no rust and no bondo. Itís never been dinged. The interior is original and immaculate except for some minor wear on some of the plastic components, insignias etc. The car was professionally painted ten years ago but honestly it looks like it was done yesterday. I donít love the color (Corvette Marlboro Marron) but it is beautifully done. Even has ghost flames on the hood.

The rear suspension has been redone. Still manual steering but he has the PS kit which is included. Original brake system but works well. All chrome has been redone and itís perfect. I don't have a pic of it but the engine compartment is immaculate with some chrome i.e. valve covers. It has hubcaps on it now and different strokes and all but the first thing Iíd do is put a set of wheels on it.

Pictures included below. Asking price is $7000. So what does everyone think? Thanks in advance!

Re: Need Advice

For some reason your post was moderated so i approved it. Didn't see any links or nothing so maybe there's a bot and it saw some trigger word in the post and moderated the post. Shoot you even spelled Galaxie correctly! Btw i found the other post, also moderated and subject was "Possible purchase". I went ahead and deleted it since it was the same as this one.

Re: Need Advice

That's a relatively cheap price of entry into the game if it's as nice as you describe. You couldn't paint one you own for that. The 390 is a good base and can give you some power with minimal changes. The only downside is that that bodystyle is a bit less desirable than the earlier versions. However, you won't find an earlier model for those numbers in that condition. I'd say if it is the car you want, and you have a vision of where you want to take it, it'll be fun.

Usual first things on an 390, ceramic coated headers, good dual exhaust, shift kit (sounds like you may have it) and a distributor recurve make a big difference and base for more power later. Gears next, then if it is an iron intake, more gain there. In the end, you can have a strong 390 or go all the way up to a deep breathing 445, all based on what you want to do

Re: Need Advice

I like it ! It has that 'unmarked interceptor' look to it. lol

I'm with My427stang on everything ..... In addition to that, speaking from eons ago experience with this year in particular:

REALLy really look that frame over, well ! These were notorious, even with super clean bodies.

I found that installing 3:50 gears in it was a nice pick-me-up. You could still cruise on the highway pretty well, and 'light to light' the car drove out 'lighter feeling' --like a much lighter vehicle.

I personally love Magnum 500 wheels, and have them on my '64 Gal. They'd look right at home on yours. But so would body-color painted rims and appropriate dog dish hubcaps ---for that 'interceptor' look. Strictly my tastes here...but maybe some ideas for ya !?

There are also some nice Galaxie groups on facebook, which I also follow. I do stop by here every few days, just to see if anything 'in my wheelhouse' gets posted, lol.

I had a sweet XL back in '75 when I was just a kid starting out on my own and working at a Ford store. Fun car, maany memories, and even kept it through lots of moves and so forth. .... In my opinion those years are just now coming into their own --so your timing is probably spot-on !

Have fun ! Norm

Thanks for your well thought out comments! Yeah I really really like the earlier models much better but it does come down to money. Being retired my budget is limited and with this car I could really do nothing and enjoy it. Well for me it desperately needs wheels. As you correctly stated the earlier models in this price range all need work or paint or interior etc. I'll end up spending a lot more.

Given the financial restraints I'm sure I will enjoy the car very much. The paint is perfect and the car is very ready for local weekend shows, cruise in's etc. I wouldn't want to put too much in it anyway as for resale a '68 is only going to bring but so much. I like your idea about the distributor recurve. I had't thought of that and it seems like a good bang for the buck. I'm thinking a 3.5 rear would also be worth the effort.

Anyway I'm still hunting but I have a feeling this will be the car I get. You'll know when I start posting all sorts of questions!!

Again thanks again for the great ideas!

Thanks for all the great comments Norm! I keep hearing about the frame so I'm definitely going to triple check that. I do think it needs adjustments in the rear. I was thinking 3.5 myself so you have confirmed that. It won't see a lot of highway driving but I think 3.5 is a good compromise.

Good call on the Magnum 500's. Honestly I didn't know what they were called lol but I do love those wheels. I've seen them on a number of Galaxies. As much as I like the look I can't get excited about the hubcap thing. I guess I'm a wheel guy lol.

Thanks again!

Re: Need Advice

It's a sweet specimen. Buy it if it turns you on.

My 67 Galaxie 2 door had bad frame rust under both doors from front wheel arch to rear wheel arch and no rust holes in the body. I would look closely there, they seem to hold winter road salt real bad right there.

I would upgrade to disc brakes, only $200 for a Scarebird kit. https://scarebird.com/index.php?rout...&product_id=88

We put the scarebird kit on my son's 65 Falcon and were very happy with the upgrade. It's a strange list of cheap, available parts. For our 65 Falcon 4 lug 14 inch steel wheel car we used our spindles, ground down the hub flange 3/8" and bought Nissan Stanza rotors, Chevy Cavalier calipers and pads, and Cadillac Eldorado hoses with the Scarbird adapter bracket. It went together and worked perfectly.

The Scarebird kit for the Galaxie uses 68-69 Mustang rotors, Chevy S10 calipers and pads.

Not a difficult or expensive price to pay to get brakes that work WAAAYYY better, especially in heavy rain and big puddles. We live in Central Florida and it rains here every day from 2 til about 5. Our Falcon brakes had all new parts, shoes, hardware kit, drums and wheel cylinders and didn't stop worth a crap after you drove through water deeper than about 1".

Re: Need Advice

You're very welcome !

Not sure where you hail from, but there are a few Fords coming out of the woodwork in my FB Marketplace area. We've just come off of a super long winter, so I'm sure many folks, both buyers, AND sellers are itching..... Here's a link to this search "390 Ford" :

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...ort=BEST_MATCH

I'd also check CL ...and maybe some of the new online marketplaces.

And while at it, don't leave out T-Birds .... There seem to be many listings that I would call 'reasonable' these days, such as this 1963 beauty:

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...5375622289254/

They too have their 'gotchas' and other issues, just go in eyes-wide-open (not lusty or infatuated eyes, lol)

But I'm a sucker for blues, greens, teal, turquoise and so forth.
