No more place to race!!

Los Angeles County Raceway is now history. The only other full quarter mile tracks in So Cal are Bakersfield (Fomoso), or Fontana (Calif. Speedway).....and Fontana refuses to open up to a weekly bracket race program.
Pomona is only for big time NHRA events, and they no longer do street legal drags anymore, so to the average Joe, its pretty much gone too!!

This is really starting to SUCK!!

Re: No more place to race!!

They shut down the only track in Jacksonville, FL too because of all the whiney people that moved in by it. It used to be nothing but trees out there. They MOVED in after the track was put there and starting crying to the city that it was too loud and they got it shut down. I'm hoping someone else starts another track because there is a lot of illegal street racing now because there is no legal place to race anymore unless you want to drive an hour and a half to Gainesville Raceway.

Re: No more place to race!!

Speaking from experience (Closing down of US30 Dragway-Gary IN), unless the politicians make money from racing, tracks will be closed. Simple as that.

Re: No more place to race!!

We only have one good track in New England, less then an hour drive, in southern NH. But soooo many folks use it, the techs are very picky, and they turn away many folks, but many more are behind them.

I was able to use the track last year, before they knew my car was faster then 13 seconds. Then the Techs really gave my car a looksy and found 7 items I need to do before I can get on that track again.

My budget does not allow me to fix these issues till next year....

Some folks at the weekly car meet are going to approach Beverly airport to see if we can start racing there. They did allow it many years ago. Probably stupid insurance companies that will kill that idea though....

If the airport receives FAA funds, you can forget it. FAA won't allow it - not compatible with airport operations. If it's private and receives no FAA funds, then you stand a chance. Over and above that, any race operator would be required to carry liability insurance and possibly insurance to cover potential damage to airport facilities.

Re: No more place to race!!

I had heard rumors somewhere that LACR was going to be shutting down. I'm surprised that it was so soon! I don't drag race but that really sux for the ones that do!

Re: No more place to race!!

You can buy Insurance packages to cover a "Street Race" event, Use a parking lot or side road (of course with the Laws Blessing) and thier are timing systems for rent.

Typicaly they want the Strip to be short (definetly under a 1/8 mile) but its fun to do. Checkout .: Altered Gas Performance Events :.

Re: No more place to race!!

mabey the existing tracks could buy up the land that surrounds the track to prevent residential developement.

Re: No more place to race!!

LACR was on land owned by a gravel company who are going to use the land to make more gravel. The track wasn't shut down to noise complaints as is often the case.

Irwindale's 1/8 mile is the only drag strip left in Los Angeles county. Pomona doesn't count as it is only run a few times a year for big $$$ NHRA stuff.

Re: No more place to race!!

Same goes here, our track on Oahu (Hawaii) has been shut down for a year already with no new track in sight. Oahu is the capitol of all the Islands, with the most people and cars (a lot of purpose built race cars)
Yet on the outer Islands of Maui, Kaui, and the Big Island (Hawaii) all have county owned race tracks.

Re: No more place to race!!

Our local drag strip (Orangeburg Drag Strip) has been in operation since 1962.It has been bought and sold a dozen times but never closed.

Darlington drag strip has been here since 1975 and is still going strong.

Rockingham drag strip has been there for ever and is still going strong especially with the Ford Mustang wars Holcomb Motorsports puts on every year.

Presently there are nine drag strips operating here. Many have been closed down due to land development, but we still have a place to race for now.

Re: No more place to race!!

We had a discussion about this on another forum that i am on. You know, its sad. for the supposed influence SoCal has had on car culture in general, it sure as hell seems that the people in charge now have all but turned their backs on it. Ive been to Irwindale and its a great track to run on but its still no 1/4. With Palmdale and Carlsbad gone its a damn shame. Fontana and Pomona honestly bring little to the scene anymore due to their limited schedules and MASSIVE amounts of cars when they do run.

We are pissing it away. There are 3 tracks left around here. Irwindale, Fontana and Pomona. Only 1 runs regularly and has anyone been there lately? the staging lanes back up all the way to the fence on Live Oak most nights. Brotherhood is dead in the water it seems, Banning never happened and now what? What eles is left? Where else is there to go?

Re: No more place to race!!

I must be fortunate to live in northeast Ohio. Although none are within a half hour of me, there are 4 tracks I can think of between 45min. and an hour and a half away. Norwalk(now Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park), Thompson Drag Raceway, Dragway 42, and Quaker City. I have yet to visit all of them, but have raced at Norwalk and Thompson. Norwalk is top notch. They used to be IHRA and are NHRA now.

Re: No more place to race!!

For us in So Cal, the only places to go are.......well, we have to travel!!
Bakersfield, Las Vegas, or Phoenix are the 3 closest full 1/4 mile strips left.
