FE porting/polishing help

I'm gearing up (haha!) to do a revamp on my 73 390 in my f250. I'm a high schooler and have absolutely no budget for aluminum heads (or really any heads) so I'm stuck with the heads I have. I wanted to tackle some porting and polishing (just to match up the ports). Is there any tips that you guys would be willing to share with me? I am wanting the engine to push out about 425-450 ft-lbs of torque and around 350-375 hp

Re: FE porting/polishing help

Welcome. There is a lot of info on the web about porting FE intakes, heads and exhausts. My only contribution right now is to clearly state that "port matching" and "gasket matching" are two completely different procedures. Gasket matching is usually avoided, as it either helps only little, or even hurts flow with factory heads. Unfortunately, a lot of folks confuse it with port matching, or assume they are the same. Stick with port matching.

Re: FE porting/polishing help

Smooth out the lumps in the exhaust ports and taper the large guide bosses down both intake and exhaust. You don't need to removed much material to help power a bunch. On the isecond ntake port there is a lump in the roof and that can be ground into the shape of a boat keel instead of a big dome. If you break through it isn't the end of the world, use a stud with sealer for that rocker shaft.
