5.0L Conversion into Falcon Set-Up
 
Been many moons since I dabbled in 5.0L engines, but this spring I am converting the Falcon to a 5.0L engine from a doaner 88 Mustang. I’d like to see what you guys think of this of the set up I had in mind:

· Stock 5.0L short block
· AFR 165 heads
· Edelbrock 7123 Intake
· Ford X303 Cam
· 75mm Throttle Body
· 1.7 Roller Rockers
· Dougs 661Y Headers
· Aluminum Radiator (built for Falcon with corrected inlet/outlet ports)

I know I will need to run a return line back to the tank. I plan to use the filler neck for this unless I come up with something better. I have the Mustang’s wire harness and I plan on using a stock A9P computer. I plan on A/C so I am keeping the serpentine belt system with all of the pumps (minus the smog pump of course). Car currently has a rebuilt AOD with a shift kit and I run the Ford 8” with a 3:90 gear and a Detroit Locker. Do any of you see an issue with this combo? Plan is for a summer cruiser and occasional pass down the ¼ mile. Thanks!

Cold air inlet, larger MAF, matching injectors, appropriate stall converter, good exhaust flow, valve springs that match the cam profile, dyno time, consider a more modern cam grind of similar specs. What's your static compression?

PSIG - you seem to have lots of info; how about you come to Michigan and help me put this together?

Cold Air - I will most likely fab something up so I am not pulling in hot air from the engine.

Larger MAF - Yes; does not make much sense to use a larger TB with out the matching MAF. Good call.

Injectors - I was thinking 24lb. seems reasonable for this set up but I planned to do some research still on those.

Stall Converter - I have (I think) a 2400RPM in there now. May have to read and tweek this a bit for my new set up.

Exhaust - I run 2.25 through some sort of performance mufflers (been 10 years, forgot what brand). Plan on using the Dougs coated full lengths.

Valve Springs - The spring that comes stock on the AFR165's are good to 6000RPM. I don't plan on a lot of 6000 - plus RPM but I think in planning for future mods I may just order with higher spring pressure so I don't float a valve at top end.

Not sure about static compression. I'm guessing with a 58cc head and stock pistons, pretty low. Like 9.0:1 maybe? Just a guess. Been a while since I talked "car-math"!

Got the motor for my project engine safely tucked into my garage. Will start disassembly and get the machine work done in the next few weeks. This will one day be a 331 with some AFR heads sitting in the '64 Falcon.

Well, post some photos as you go along. :tup: BTW - if your '88 was an original speed-density ECM (not MAF), then you may want to stick with that. Many folks say to use a alter MAF brain on them, but that only goes so far in "self-adjustment". Since you're going for more than a cam and header change, you will need to tune it for best performance anyway. In that case, just tune the original ECM, save the MAF cash, and avoid added restriction. Just a thought.

It all sounds pretty good, but as was mentioned, dont forget injector size (insert math here), MAF size (if using a maf), and find a better more modern cam. Custom cams seem to be all the rage, but if theyre not that expensive, it can get you what youre after and get more driveability as well.

Another thing to consider is how do you want to build the 331 in the future? It may not be such a bad idea to step up to 185cc heads now to keep from having to replace a perfectly good set of 165s.

It's a good point. I'm almost sure I will one day want more power and wish I had gone with the 185cc heads. It needs to be a very streetable car that is good in hot summer traffic jams with the A/C blowing, constant freeway driving and occasional trips down the track. Tall order, but I'm sure I can figure it out. I picked a 331 as it seemed like a good combination of power and durability. I like the idea of aftermarket EFI. Easier to tune and adapt to changes. I may go that route.

I'm really wishing I had gone aftermarket right now. The aftermarket systems are expensive up front, but they're lighter, simpler, smaller, and best of all, they're self tuning. If you're not that familiar with tuning, that can be a real godsend.

If you are going to use a electric fan set up .. I would use the explore serpentine belt drive setup to get more room for the fan. Just did the same set up had to moved the radiator forward to get radiator in...

The X cam will not clear the stock pistons without fly cutting them for value clearance. If you us the 1/7 rockers you will need to cut the pistons even more. You will also have to rebalance the lower end.If your bottom end is stock you really don't want to be turning 6000 rpms alot. With the heads you have you could start with a Trick flow stage I cam 1/6 rockers ,Ford explorer intake,24lb injectors,70mm TB ,70mm MAS,The headers you listed. You would have a great running motor that would last for ever and be pretty cheap to build. When you got the funds go with the 331 stroker kit,swap out the cam for a larger one and a aftermarket intake. It would run very strong and not cost you the farm.I ran a set up quit close to that in my FFR Cobra only I ran Trickflow 170 heads with 202's. I ran. that set up for 10 years I always planned to go with a 347 stroker, but it ran so wellI never bothered to change it.Try a 3.50 to a 4.11 gear and it should run really great on the streets and still be good to take some runs up the Expressway.I'm running a 65 Falcon with a 4.11 gear with a small block with a AOD trans and it's pretty quick and I still take trips to the cruises all over the state.Roger
