Pump pressure

Does anyone know what kind of pressure the low pressure efi pump puts out, the tank mounted one in the 2 pump system? I was thinking of removing the second external high pressure pump and using the in tank for a carb conversion. I would put a regulator on it up at the engine with a return so not to dead head the pump, but not sure what pressure range to get the regulator for. Also should ask if this pump has enough volume to run a stock 351W. This is on a mid 80's baby LTD had CFI going to 351 carb swap. Thanks

Re: Pump pressure

The low-pressure in-tank pump in the Ford CFI systems were rated 4 to 6 psi. With an old pump and those long lines to the front, I would test actual max psi at the engine before assuming anything. The flow was primary in the design (not the pressure) and has plenty for your application - if the psi is good. BTW - if you are looking for better power and mileage for up to 300hp, the CFI system is a good step-up from a carb if controlled with a cheap aftermarket ECM such as a Megasquirt-1 or 2, and tuned with a WBO2. Been there - done that. Good stuff.

PS: The replacement pumps are Airtex E2485 and Carter P74067 for reference examples.

Re: Pump pressure

Great, that's what I needed to know. I always did think the CFI was pretty cool when it came out, but everyone seemed to be afraid of them and SEFI came so close behind no one seemed to bother with the other. Thanks

Re: Pump pressure

True enough. EFI was all new and scary, with no slick hacking and programming stuff like we have today. Nowadays, it's been found to make HP and MPG within a hair of the sexy newer MPFI and SEFI systems. Just sayin', as they are viable and simple to improve on carb performance for not much more than a carb, and an easy way to get EFI performance as a carb conversion - and you already have it. Let us know how the pump tests-out.
