70 Maverick project

So, I have bought a 70 maverick, I paid 1600 bucks (included delivery) theres some rust in the quarters and the car is rattle canned, it came with a 302 as far as I know the bottom end is stock, it is freshly machined the crank is turned 30/30 and it is bored .40 over, It has a 9 inch with 4.11's or 4.30's with a spool, and a (supposedly) rebuilt c4 with a Tci saturday night special 2000 stall. I got a ton of parts with it and I will list the setup I plan to do. I'm eventually wanting to build a 408 stroker but for now I'm just throwing together the 302 for a cheap little strip car for the time being. and I got a set of knock off weld 5 spoke wheels with newer tires

here are the things I am putting on it

world product jr iron heads
scorpion 1.6 ratio roller rockers
edelbrock performer rpm intake (I also got a vic jr single plane intake as well)
Headers and flowmaster exhaust
I'm not sure on what cam I am going to run yet but like I said I'm planning on leaving the bottom end stock and throwing a big cam in it and I've got a 750 holley dp on the shelf I will throw on it to see how it runs, but given those hints what cam do you guys think I should run? and what do you think in general? just figured I would get some input thanks again!

Sounds like a can of worms that equals "money Pit".
Tear it apart first and see what you have or don't have. Cheaper down the line.

the motor is out of the car, pan is off and so are the heads and the block is good and is machine shop new, I'm getting the heads checked out and cleaned, the car is already set up for a small block. So it is a clean slate to start from, should be a decent running little car for what it is

Re: 70 Maverick project

Always check machine shop work. 30/30 seems mighty deep for a crank grind. Besides they do make mistakes to.
Your BIG RED FLAG here is "supposedly". Pull the rear end and check it.
Trans have it inspected while the engine is out.
Big cam= big mistake as does a 750 DP. Little over stock and 600 will be so much nicer to play with and the trans won't fight you.

I'm throwing a .512 lift hydraulic cam in it, the heads are at the machine shop for a valve grind, new springs, cleaned and milled, the crank yes is milled down a lot and the bottom end is stock, but the way I figure I'll just run it because it will be somewhat cheap, as for the rear end I did the lazy check since I don't have a shop or much time , one rotation of the wheel equals 4.75 turns of the yoke. And the rear wheels are mated together, as for the trans its gunna cost me 400 bucks for them just to look at it, so I mean its a waste of money I think since its not too hard to drop a trans out

Its a summit racing brand cam and lifter kit SUM-K30062 228intake/exhaust duration at 50 thousandths and 512 intake/exhaust duration and 112* lobe seperation. I have the heads on it now and all that is left is for the rocker arms to go on (had to replace one that was messed up) and drop the pushrods in along with the intake, then little things like fan/pulleys etc. The story was he bought the car with a 347 stroker, ran like crap, pulled heads off, found out it was a tired 302, kept the heads junked the rest, then he bought the short block that I have now, well one of the valve spring retainters was messed up and all the lower retainters were cracked, along with 7 bent valves and a rocker arm that was broken in two tells me he scattered parts all over hell and back and never got around to fixing it

As I said, a can of worms. I'd have the heads inspected for possible cracks and bad valve guides. The cam is still to big for your engine. Drop 20 degs off the specs and .100" lift and you'll be much happier with it.

the heads have already been to the machine shop, new valves new springs, decked and everything checked, this is gunna be a strip car with very little street use, that's why I'm throwing in such a radical cam, and I'm running the performer rpm intake on it, the motor is almost together and going in the car soon

Good start. I'd still get a cam with .450" lift at most and 214 degs @ .050 on the intake duration. drop the 4.72s down to 4.11 and use a 2800rpm stall convertor.

UPDATE!! So I got it running It is a hard running car, it will hit 6500 rpm so quick I thought the tack was on 6cyl mode lol. I took it to the track, running slicks, and it ran a 13.8 at 101mph (and that was with a .455 light lol). I have terrible 60' times 2.xx. The trans shifts hard and good, I'm running a 2400 stall that came with it in it. I was running slicks on it and had them aired to 15psi when I ran the 13.8 pass, dropped them down to 12psi and ran a 14.1. The issue is the car doesn't have any bottom end to it, so next time out I'm gonna run 25psi and see if it will let them spin a bit to get the rpm's up. Then eventually I'll buy a bigger stall converter. I also picked up another set of world product jr heads but they're the aluminum ones that are fully dressed with harland sharp rollers that will go in the 351w I'm going to be putting together. I talked to a guy that had a maverick at the goodguys drags on friday who had a 351 with a stock bottom end besides heavier rod bolts and different pistons (11:1 comp) and with a performer rpm intake, 850 carb, and "cheap chinise heads" and was running 11:30's with it.
