Ignition Help

Hi all. So I took my maverick down for the last test and tune of the season. Long story short ran one pass, it was popping and spitting and was hard pressed to climb above 5 grand. Pulled the valve covers off to make sure we didn't bend a push rod. Everything looked good put the valve covers on then lost all spark. Took it home tried a points distributor and 3 different coils. Nothing. Then jumped the battery to the coil and jumped the silinoid. It fired albeit running rough. Compression test was about 115psi on all cylinders and I'm at a loss. I know the distributor is about shot (1967 original) and I have another eletronic distributor but I don't want to risk burning out the module (like I did on the other one) I'm thinking its something to do with the ignition switch so I was just wanting to wire in a push button start with like a keyed kill switch. What wires do I splice into and how to I wire it up and keep my alternator charging. Thanks.

Re: Ignition Help

That's a lot of work, especially if you just have a bad connector, chafed wire, or fried switch. Ignition switches are about $30 and 20 minutes, and wire or connectors are cheap. Why not test the wiring and see what's actually wrong? Is anything else not working? Plus, if you wire it up in any (repair or re-wire) fashion, it will still run rough as shown by your jumper test. It would seem you have more than a coil power issue going on.

If it were me, I'd use the jumper to get it running, set timing, and diagnose the rough running first. Once it's running sweet I'd do a quick check of the ignition power wiring to see if it's just a quick fix.
