looking at a 65 coupe/What to look for?

Hey guys, I have a customer that i'm working on his early bronco and he want's to trade me a 65 coupe for some of the labor. It's has a 289,t-5 trans, white w/blue shelby stripes.Has AC unit inside but not in the engine compartment. He wants to take off about 3k in labor for the car. What do you guy's think? What should I look out for as possible trouble area's?
I sold my 85 saleen (13k miles) a while back and haven't had a street car since. Might be a good time to get back in again.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

3k? What kind of shape is it in?

If its a running, driving, nice looking car, its definitely worth 3000.

Look for rust on the floorpans - they have a tendency to disappear - also check the rear frame rails where the leafsprings attach, they do the same thing.

Just take a test drive and see how it runs, if its going to need a lot of work, etc.

3,000 is what a lot of people are paying for cars they're going to give a full resto, so getting a decent driveable car is worth it if you ask me.

Heh a T-5 already in ? A 65 coupe is always nice to have for a street car. You can ditch that 289, get a stroked 351w and really have some fun. As a added bonus you will get all of the WoW look at that classic cool comments, not to mention that the car lb is less than 3k, and probaly has a 9inch rear..can you say smoking a whole lot of people ?

Also parts are dirt cheap. And you can do all the work yourself ! Man that would be a done deal.

A '65 with a 9"?

I don't think nines were ever offered in the pre-67 Mustang - they weren't designed to take an engine bigger than a 289.

But yeah, the weight is pretty small - you can smoke MUCH more powerful cars pretty easy because of the weight advantage. Mustang Cobra's have 390 Rated HP (usually a little higher than that) and weigh 3900 pounds. You'd only have to make 300 HP (easy with a 302/289) to manage the same speed.

Yea, but if the previous owner has already done some swaps, he might of swapped a 9inch into it.

Look up under the dash for rusted water trails, Cowling. All fender wells, front & rear. Under battery. Crawl under the floor areas and look for any rust. Trunk is another good place. Bottom corners of the rear windows.

If the batteries still in the front, check behind it. Mine was rusted out in that front corner kinda bad.

The only 64-66's that came with 9's in the back were the shelbys. Still it is a light enough car that a 289 with a cam and head swap and a decent set of headers will do just fine in it without being horrably front heavy like a 351 block would do to it. If you are going to straight line drag it sure, put a 408 in it. If you want it to handle worth a darn stay with a 289/302 block and just stroke it if you want more power.

Why cant life ever be simple, and car parts be cheap???

Thanks for the tips. I only saw it for a few minutes a few weeks ago,so i hope to take a more detailed look in the next few days. I also remembering it having swaybars front and rear. No power steering and probably no disc brakes i'm sure.
Thanks again,
Mike

Don't let no power steering put you off - You don't really need it except for making parking more convenient. You'll just have to hoof it a little in the lots.

And disc brakes aren't really necessary, either, the 65's are so light that they stop well even with drums - my buddy's '66 stops fine.

The disk brakes were the best addition I made to my 65 mustang 289. If you are going to go fast you want to stop.......

The other easy and cheaper improvement is subframe connectors. The car handles much better with them. It's a little welding and $100, that really improves the car.

Besides whats been mentioned, dump water down the cowl. Very common, EXPENSIVE to fix rust area. Sound like a deal anyway!
