Porthole window mustang

Hi there im new to this so bear with me, my dad recently purchased a 1973 Ford mustang hardtop. What i want to know is the mustang my dad purchased has porthole windows. I am wondering if anyone knows anything about them if they were a factory option or a custom deal?

I think it's all custom work.
I've seen a LOT of mustangs... You pop's looks like a High Country or a Grande.
The only two Fords I know of with a Factory Porthole Window are the Early Thunderbird's, and the 50th anniversary T-bird....

I agree with FE ( Custom Job ) and it seems as the Grande was the car it uaually was done on. This same question came up in another forum and the person asking had a Grande just like the one you posted.

Locally in Sou. Calif. they sold the special models in 1973 to promote some interest in to getting them off the lots, late in the model year.

I cannot remember as to how they were promoted, but a quicky look inside the auto will confirm it. The parts could interchange with T-Bird or Cougar.

Re: Porthole window mustang

We decoded the vin and it isn't a grande. The person who we got it from had gotten a option sheet from the ford motor company and it didn't show this option, maybe it was custom. I cant find anything on the internet about it but i have found another mustang almost just like it.

Re: Porthole window mustang

It's definitely custom, as neither car shows the windows in eh same position.

If it was dealer done then it was a local company that modded it. Check into Ford van conversions for the late 60's and early 70's they had Hearts, port holes etc in them and they were not factory

You will not find any T-bird NOR Cougar trim on the inside of that car I assure you.

Re: Porthole window mustang

joke

Maybe a dealer thing cause here's another one!

I have seen a 71-73 fastback with Lincoln MkIV opera windows on it. I'm assuming owner or dealer installed.
Lots of bad taste in the 70's!!!

Even if its not factory i think it looks kind of neat. So far the plans are to restore it to its former glory again. Thanks for all of the information on it.

Re: Porthole window mustang

You're right about that, it sets that 71-73 body style on edge a little bit.

Re: Porthole window mustang

Hello. This appears to have been quite the debate. I own the red 73 Mustang with porthole windows that you'd found in the picture. The port hole windows were a Ford Option in 73 but quite a few of them had them added later at the dealership once they caught on. I have the original 73 Window Sticker for my Mustang showing my porthole windows installed as a factory option, so mine is one of the few that apparently was installed in the factory and not added at the dealership later. Just FYI that most will be a dealership added Ford endorsed addition while only a small number were factory installed. Any questions let me know.

Re: Porthole window mustang

I am about 99% Positive that they were not a FOMOCO option. But a Dealer installed aftermarket dress up.

If you have any dealer option info and could share it that would be wonderful.

The Dealership where mine was sold new on April 30th, 1973 was called:
Bill Woods Ford, Inc.
5025 Northeast Antioch Road
Kansas City, MO 64119

The original Car Invoice I have lists the black vinyl roof w/port hole windows on the invoice labeled under: New Car--Factory Installed, with all the other optional items including the 351 2V V-8 and other nifty items like the Cruise-O-Matic, Competition Suspension, etc. I hope this info is helpful. I ran into multiple dead-ends myself researching the windows as well but then found some information on them and the installation listed on the original invoice. Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Ok, if you have the invoice, post a pic of it.

He doesn't need the to prove his invoice I had one bought brand new off the show room floor, it was a rare but factory option also available as a dealer install. Research through ford to find out more. They did have some companies later that made an aftermarket copy of the window. Easy to tell the difference the factory install all the trim fit and finished the look inside and out the aftermarket looked more like the kind you saw on vans of that era.
