Battery too hot ??

I just bought a 72 mach1project, picked up a 560 cc battery and tried an innitial start up of the motor , it popped but then checked it and the wires, cylinoid was getting hot so dissconnected it then tried it again and had no spark.

Can this batter be too hot for car ?
Could i have fried some stuff ?
