Re: Need help identify a cobra engine as well trying identify what manual transmissio

Using a casting number will not tell you IF the block has HiPo main caps. ALL 6 bolt bellhousing hipo blocks used the C5AE-E casting number, but so did non hipos. Pull the pan to be sure. Look for the "hatchet" behind the crank gear , the thick main caps , and the 3/8ths rod bolts. Orange paint marks would be a bonus for ID of the crank and rods.

Judging by the water pump outlet it's a mid to late 60's small block. The engine number is up under where the starter mounts. A pic of that and we can help ID the block at least. As for the internals, it's a crapshoot without taking the thing apart. You may have a gem, or a boat anchor.

BChin,

Your first picture shows me the exhaust has been ported. The harmonic balancer IS the 289 HiPo version and the aluminum oil pan is the one used for 289 Cobras but was also an over the counter part "in the day" . Someone has obviously substituted the 2bbl intake as on a very few of the early 260 powered Cobras had a 2bbl carb and the one you show is not from one of them. "I" would pull the pan and look for the thick hi po main caps and big rod bolts. The block is a 6 bolt ('65 and later version) so it will take any trans/ bellhousing with 6 attaching bolts .It may or may not be a genuine Cobra engine , but it is a great find. Let me know if you need more info or find more clues.
