Congrats on your perseverance and hard work.

Are you going to keep the engine and tranny stock?

Re: 1974 Ford Maverick Project!

been a long time since i've updated this, but heres a recent batch of stuff

Alrighty, Update time since a few things have happened.

I finally finished my small bumper swap, the big bumpers came off the second weekend I had the car (around a year ago) and i've been driving it around locally without bumpers while I waited to get a set of small bumpers off an earlier year car. These are hard to find for a good price, but after a long time of waiting and looking all over, I came up with a pretty decent set of bumpers.

The front actually showed up first in may, but I had no brackets for it and was still trying to hunt down a set of those, so the rear ended up going on first as the one I found came with brackets.

some shots of the rear installed.

Then last week I finally got front brackets in, and was able to slap the front bumper on last night. so the small bumper swap is complete!

Painted the rear blue / white striped valance solid white today as well, the front I might paint as well, we'll see.

and here's a before and after. big bumper vs small bumper.

I also started working on a new grill, progress is slow on this because I got so much stuff going on, and the car already has a grill so this isnt a priority, but the shell is done. just need to make brackets and fill in the open space with expanded metal.

Re: 1974 Ford Maverick Project!

well it's been a while since I've updated this! Have done a few things since, I'll make quick notes here.

Got the carb tuned properly for the colder weather. now runs excellent!

Also installed a Tach so I can see my RPM's!

Installed the bumper valances hopefully next weekend.

Here's a video on the tach install I did for my YouTube.

Re: 1974 Ford Maverick Project!

My parents had a 71 new with a 250 and 3 on the tree, took my driving test in it. They later had a 74 with the LDO interior. Looking back, the small bumper 2 door with LDO, 250, but 4 or 5 speed would be perfect for me.

Re: 1974 Ford Maverick Project!

Well, things have basically come to a stand still for now. While modifying the front fenders for the small bumper conversion, I came across a mess of rust one of the previous owners tried hiding by simply putting new metal over top. instead of cutting out and replacing. so, I have to get that taken care of before the small bumper goes on up front. Will likely just end up getting new fenders from ebay. Going to need some overtime for that.

Old bumpers were.... well, old. haha. The front wasn't too bad. pretty solid but the rear was pretty rusted away on the inside.

As for the new bumper valances...
Got EEEEEEM!

I'll be hitting them with paint stripper tonight after work and getting them ready for paint on the weekend.

Found some of the parts needed for the small bumper conversion. ordered em up and they are on the way to the border. Mint condition. No dents, straight as an arrow, and no rust at all!

Thanks man. Yeah I always could have re-shot it. I still can if I wanted too. it's good enough though. far better than before and unless you're right up next to it you can't see any flaws, so I'm happy with it for now!

Ah, the "magic floating headlights" look. Hey, the next time it doesn't block-sand quite right, just stop there and don't polish or wax it. Then when you do the next panel, you can simply wipe it down, scuff it lightly, and shoot some extra on it also without fighting with polishing residue, oils or waxes. Looking good!

Re: 1974 Ford Maverick Project!

Well I got the hood wet sanded, polished, and waxed. Half decently happy with the end results. It's by no means perfect, or as good as I could have gotten it. But now I know for the rest of the car what I need to do differently. AKA More coats! Couldnt sand it down enough to get it glass smooth as the layers were getting pretty thin. so I'll lay more coats for the rest of the car and I should be good to go.

I also blacked out the chrome trim on the hood, the headlight surrounds, and the grille! this will be the look I got for. white with black trim. Kind of a cool look in my eyes.

few pics just because I went cruising around and took some.

some closer-ups of the hood.
