Re: trouble installling edelbrock intake

Yeah, it was around .3. not .030. I went from having a china wall to a china trench! it was cheaper to machine it down then go out and get a different set of cylinder heads. Anyway, important thing is that it fits on now!

Early ( 69-70) blocks were shorter by .020 over later blocks . The Edelbrock intake is made for the later 9.500 blocks. Are you sure you cut each side .300. It should have been more like .030.

Re: trouble installling edelbrock intake

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to give an update. I got the intake manifold to finally fit, took about 4 trips to the machine shop (easier to take off than to put it back on)! Overall, they milled about 0.300" off of each side, and the holes finally lined up. I checked the port alignment with a small camera I have and it looks good enough. The intake manifold ports are a hair higher than the cylinder head ports, but it is such a small amount I am not too worried, I could use a thinner intake manifold gasket to remedy that.
I am using parts from swap meets and junkyards to work on this torino, so the history of some of the pieces isn't known. I'm thinking the heads I used were most likely milled several times in its history, or the person who milled them made a mistake and milled too much. I don't think the intake manifold was the problem, because it did fit on an engine with edelbrock heads without having to be milled.
Now on to the next problem!

Re: trouble installling edelbrock intake

Hey everyone!

I spoke with Edelbrock and they said the manifolds are a little thicker than stock, they said to grind down the edges where it hits the valve covers and it should be fine. They said this usually happens when putting the intake on stock heads. So, I'll see how it fits after grinding off the corners a bit!

FWIW.....I bought one like you have for a 408W Stroker years ago and the machining was HORRIBLE for the Thermostat housing so we had to clean it up before it would seal!!

I suspect you may have one of their "Rejects" by mistake and I'll bet they'll replace it if you inquire!!??

Re: trouble installling edelbrock intake

Hi!

I have part number 7181, it was labeled on the box and also stamped into the manifold. The holes line up fine. Has anyone here measured the width of a 7181? Should it be wider than the original manifold? Thanks again!

Do the bolt holes line up?

Re: trouble installling edelbrock intake

The Performer RPM for a 351W (Windsor) is part number 7181. Is that what you have? There is a part number 7183, which is for a 351C (Cleveland). Maybe you have the wrong intake?

Re: trouble installling edelbrock intake

I forgot to mention, I replaced the original heads with a set that were milled. The original intake fit on the original heads and the milled heads just fine.

trouble installling edelbrock intake

Hi everyone!

I'm having a little trouble and was hoping someone could shed a little light on my problem. I am installing an edelbrock rpm performer intake onto my 351w. It appears the edelbrock intake is too wide and will not fit. At first I thought it was because the heads were milled a bit, but the original intake manifold fits just fine. I measured the two and the edelbrock was about 11 1/8" wide and the original manifold a hair under 11". Is it common for edelbrock intake manifolds to run big or did I just get a bad one? Do the weiand intakes run a little more true to size? I'm debating on getting a different intake manifold or having the edelbrock milled down to fit. Thanks for your help!

-Pete
