I think the 400 uses the big block bell housing pattern, while the 351C uses the small block pattern. My 70 GT 351C came with an FMX. I put it in my 65 pickup with a 5.0 HO which I got out of an 87 Lincoln. I am putting an AOD into the Ranchero to gain overdrive for the highway.

What I don't like about the 400 is that the Pistons are about 1/4" down from the top at TDC. Ford did that for Emissions reasons, not for performance, it drastically reduces compression. 400's don't generally get very good gas mileage. This swap would be a step backwards to me. I would stick with the Cleveland.

If you really want more cubes, you can rebuild your current motor and install a stroker crank in it for a reasonable amount of money. If you're motor is not burning oil, I would install your aluminum heads with a mild cam, headers and a dual plane intake and see what you think. Way less money, way better motor, way better gas mileage.

Thanks for the info I'm just trying to figure out which way to go keep the 351C or go to the 400 I'm retired so I'm working on a budget lol Thanks again Bill

You can just buy the spacers for the intake that will allow you to use any 351C intake on the 400. That is what is on my 400 with a Torker intake. Distributor clearance can be a problem, though, needing a taller distributor or some notching on the intake, which is what was done on mine.
It's in a 64 Galaxie, and the motor mounts don't look fabricated, so there should be some available.

swapping in a 400

I have a 74 Ranchero with a 351C I am thinking about swapping in a 400 short block from TMI . I have a set of Alum Edelbrock heads #61629 I know the 351C intake will not fit the 400 but will everything else swap over like the pulleys & brackets work on the 400 from the 351C. What about the motor mounts can I just buy them for a 400. I found a FMX with a bell housing for the 400 so I'm good there. The 351C that is in the Ranchero now seems to run OK it doesn't smoke or knock. I am going to make it my daily driver so I would like to have a rebuilt motor to start with. From what I have read on TMI's site it looks like the 400 short block he builds you get more for your money than what I have found any were else.
