do the square rear rubber mounts for 1963 galaxie go on top of the frame or the under side of frame!

To really do the job right you would have to remove the body from the frame completely and in a perfect word you would put the body on a rotisserie so you could attack the underside.
In my world, I just remove the body bolts up to the fire wall ones then just lift the body up in the rear about 6". I take a grinder with a stiff wire wheel or a light flap wheel and clean the trunk floor of all paint and rust in an area about 8" wide across the trunk floor right above the cross member. This will show you the location of the spot welds, you can then use a spot weld drill or even a regular drill to drill out the spot weld areas. This should release the cross member so you can make the repairs to it.

I have had the best results by cleaning the area with a disk and drilling out the spot welds and removing the cross member, make new pieces where necessary and then re-welding the cross member back to the underside of the trunk floor (with all the body mount holes lined up) and then fab and weld in the floor patch panels.

Scott,
Thanks. You are correct, the end of the cross members are gone and the body is sitting lower in those spots. My only open question is how far do I have to dismantle the car to lift the body up to have this work done.

3 of the 4 body mounting areas in the trunk are bad. Here is a picture of each one.

Driver side behind rear wheel / Passenger side / Passenger side under tail light. The body brace is gone and collapsed down to the frame.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing. This is do-able. I have the car back in my garage, I'll take some pictures and post them up.

Re: 1963 Trunk body mounting locations MIA

I ran in to this issue recently, it almost made me look for another body
I thought about cutting out patches from another body, but decided to give it a shot

This is what i came up with for this body mount, Dont need to many fancy tools, i used a socket and the large hole from a magnet and pressed em in my vise

I ended up having to cut the whole mount out and fixing the inner rocker - nothing worse than welding up a new piece only to discover more rust

I did use 16gauge for all my mounts and structural pieces.

Now that I look at my pictures the actual body mount location was intact, it was outboard of the mount I had to make, still doable I would guess
Thank you for the pictures! My cross member is rotten completely through the mounting hole, about 4 inches on both sides. The fact that you did this though gives me some hope.

I'll get some pictures tomorrow to post up. My cousin is having a friend who builds custom cars look at this tomorrow so we'll get a professional option.

The skill required is understood. I will not be tackling this myself. My cousin has a custom fabrication company but has not done a job like this yet hence my questions on how to get access to the area, not necessarily how to fix it once there.

Thanks for the idea of sourcing the pieces from a salvaged car. I'm afraid if I find one in the area it will be as bad or worse then mine. There is also a lot of undercoating on the car which makes cleaning up for welding more work.

No replies is not a good sign...I'm in trouble here.

What do I have to remove and or disconnect to lift the body from the frame 3 or 4 inches?

1963 Trunk body mounting locations MIA

Tonight I made the discovery we all dread. What I thought was going to be a simple body mount repair in the truck lead to discovering much more of a problem.

3 of the 4 body mount locations in the truck are completely rusted away. The two behind the rear wheels and the passenger side rear most mount just in front of the rear bumper. It's so bad the right side of the car sits an inch closer to the bumper!

I attached a couple pictures from "Rod Shop's" beautiful white '64 build to show the specific areas.

Two questions...
1. Can these parts be bought or must they be made?
2. How can this be replaced without lifting the body completely from the frame?
