Sealing the rear bed cover to keep water out is next to impossible. But could possibly be done with some careful redesign. May be better to just waterproof everything under there and make sure there are plenty of drain holes so any water that gets in there can just drain on though instead of just sitting there.

No simple way to replace the rear shocks without being able to remove that panel. Would need some major mods to do it any other way. Maybe you have a better idea.

Early rancheros all had the problem of gas leaking down the side. Up to about 63 have a vent to the tank, which can be plugged and non-functional. After that there is no vent so the gas cap has to be a vented cap. and with the filler mounted so low on the side, hence gas stains down the side. A vent can be added by using the drain plug on top the tank (ford inverted a car tank modified for the ranchero/wagon/sd) is why the drain plug is on top) and connect to a new fitting at the top of the filler neck. Also relocating the filler either up higher on the side or moving it inside the bed as a better solution. Then after adding a vent, using a non-vented cap is possible. I did all those things.

Sorry, the stuff I said about the gas cap opening applies to a 64/5. I'm not sure what it would be like for a 63.

Good luck trying to seal the panel. I think the best bet is to just make sure everything under the panel is properly coated and letting the water run through it to drain out the bottom.

As for the filler, well the gas leaking from around the gas cap is a common problem with the 60-65 ranchero/station wagon. It was poorly designed by ford. Gas will spill out on hard right turns if the tank is more than half full.

As to using a door, you would likely have to fab the door yourself. The opening for the gas cap is oval, not round, so you'd either have to make a new door or cut your ranchero's opening to the same size as the door you're planning to use. Plus, a body line runs right down the middle of the opening so the door would need to be bent.

ranchero rear panel R & R.......

Any suggestrions as to permantly seal the sheet metal panel on the 63 Ranchero? I have made a system that will not require the removal of the panel forever if rear shocks need to be replaced in the future. They can now be replaced from under the car. Fitment etc. is the same for the shocks. The previous owner(s) had tried different 'solutions' to keep water from getting into the car. My panel had waht looks like the 3m stuff that is found on the water shields on the doors. They had tried caulking and some marine water proofing stuff but neither worked. If anybody is interested, i can make a few kits.

Also, they re-routed the gas filler tube to the bed area & it fills from the driver side panel. They cut the panel for the filler tube. Bought the tube and hose, but the Ford drawings are not that detailed. Looks like 3-4 screwshold the filler tube and the hose coinnects to the SIDE of the tank. I think that is why the car leaked and developed gas stains. And why they rerouted the filling. They also sealed up the original side cavity with 'glass. Can someone attach real good pics of what it supposed to look like? If I start digging out the fiberglass, I want to know what I am looking at so I can stop grinding away at it. Hopefully, the original metal "flange'? is still there!!! Was thinking of putting in a door that takes the place of the gas cap. Similiar to the spring loaded filler doors. Any ideas of what car I can pull the door out of and graft it into the Ranchero? Diameter wisw it would need to be the ame as the opening on the fender. Thanks guys.
