Re: Project "GuldenRod" 72 Gran Torino Wagon

Put my cabinets and paint bench under the loft I built

Eventually gonna move the bench in the middle over in front of the lift so can build a bathroom next to the loft I built

Had to put my 97 Explorer on the lift to try it out
Gonna be really nice having a twin post lift to use
I already pulled a body off a car to clean .paint and undercoat the bottom of floors then put it back on the painted chassis.

Bought some parts for the car from a member of Fairlane Club of America
Rust free Sport hood with original factory paint that has been in storage for 35 yrs

Rust Free driver door

A nice passenger side Sport door panel and perfect black dash pad

last is NOS tailgate shell
It has dents on outer skin but can be straightened
At least it will be rust free

Re: Project "GuldenRod" 72 Gran Torino Wagon

Got a new Shop in September so now will have a place to start my build on the custom 2 door panel wagon
It's 30x40 with two 10x10 garage doors and has twin post lift,4 propane heaters in the ceiling and 2 paddle fans in the ceiling to move the air plus has security system also.
There also is a 9.5'x30' garage off the back with small garage door

Re: Project "GuldenRod" 72 Gran Torino Wagon

Got bell housing blasted clean

My redneck 4 post lift,LOL

Darn so close but yet so far. I removed exhaust X-pipe,mufflers,headers,driveshaft,starter,torque converter nuts, shifter and kick down linkage, speedo cable.all but 2 bolts on the bell housing and the F-ing cage nut on tranny cross-member is spinning and can't get the cross-member out of the way to yank the trans out. Sucks as i'm gonna have to cut one of my 7/8 wrenches to stick inside frame to get that bolt out of the frame

Gonna blast and paint driveshaft while it's out and might yank the rear axle out to blast and paint as i'm installing my Spohn Performance upper and lower control arms since I will be driving it and also want to blast and paint the coil springs as the rest of the chassis has been detailed with paint and looks good still. Also going to Blast and Ceramic coat my Hooker headers as the cheap paint they used all burnt off but I knew when I bought them that would happen so I ordered the ceramic paint and copper header gaskets which I have not used knowing the headers would come off again.

Here is my new control arms

Re: Project "GuldenRod" 72 Gran Torino Wagon

update got a replacement trans for the wagon
Pan fill C4 just like the original but all rebuilt
gonna blast all the blue paint off the case as I don't like painted cases and want that nice aluminum it will be after I blast it
Might spray some clear over the case so it keeps it easy to clean and not stain the aluminum after

came with a new TCI flex plate and found it was a 11.5" bolt pattern 28 oz 164 tooth so just have to check my original and if the same will use the new TCI

Re: Project "GuldenRod" 72 Gran Torino Wagon

the FCA mini Meet show ended and I had won a gift certificate to TGIF as won of the raffle prizes. and as i'm getting ready to load my car on the trailer up comes this guy and introduces me as one of the facebook members from our Torino facebook groups. He had been in NY and NJ on business with his company all the way from Tulsa, Oklahoma and drove over an hour to see some Torinos,Fairlanes and Gran Torino's and missed all the cars but mine.
So we loaded up my car and I treated him to a late lunch at TGIF Friday's with my gift certificates.
It was the least I could do for him traveling all that way and missed the show and all the nice cars. we stopped by my brothers house where I live
and talked for a while before he had to get back on the road and we had my dad take a few photos of us by my wagon on the trailer.

I'm the guy in Blue shirt and Ray is in the black

Re: Project "GuldenRod" 72 Gran Torino Wagon

ok now we are pretty much up to date as of 2013.
after I got back from Carlisle the C4 transmission lost forward gears ansd the car was parked in the garage till this year when i moved my shop. i still haven't fixed the trans and looking to get another one to pit in it's place in a few weks till I can totally rebuild my original and take my time detailing it and making it better then new.

Fast forward to April 2014 when I towed the wagon to my local Ford dealer for a Fairlane Club Of America Mini Meet show

Thought I was going to be the only 72-76 Gran Torino there when after the show started this sweet 72 GTS fasback Q code 4 spd rolled in

Re: Project "GuldenRod" 72 Gran Torino Wagon

I then took the wagon to Carlisle Ford Nationals 2013
which found out after that Bangshift.com took photos of my wagon and featured it on the event coverage page

here is the link to the event coverage by bangshift.com and my wagon as the cover car http://bangshift.com/general-news/ev...ge-click-here/

To my surprise I was picked for 1st place in 68-76 Torino Modified and my buddy Alex got 3rd for his 72 GTS fastback which I thought was nicer as his was a finished car but the participants of the show vote on the cars and alot of people commented to me during the show that they liked what i was doing making it into a panel wagon and as in progress with one window on one side and the panel on other they could see the before and after effect. here is my award

Re: Project "GuldenRod" 72 Gran Torino Wagon

ok moving forward with updating the progress photos.

next step was to detail out the suspension and chassis
before cleaning and paint

after cleaning and sanding

after paint both sides

next I cut the rear crossmeber out and added a 2 inch heavy wall box tube and welded a Reese receiver on it for towing

Re: Project "GuldenRod" 72 Gran Torino Wagon

yes eventually it will be made like the photo. I have a 72 fastback parts car to get what I need for the build but first I need to complete the tailgate repairs and do the other quarter panel as it still has the window. car has been on hold for a year.Hoping to get back on the build this winter. I'm getting a lower tailgate section from a Ranchero to help with the repair so I don't have to try and make the lower skin with the body line. have to get it shipped from out west so i'm waiting for that before I start up again and also the transmission lost forward gears and needs rebuilt so i'm going to be getting another C4 in about a month so it will move under it's own power again as pushing this beast is not an option.

I have a small shop where I build custom cars for a living so it will be nice to have my own and great advertisement for my shop.
currently building a custom 68 Mustang fastback for a customer but can't post photos of the build as the guy doesn't want it seen on the internet, hopefully when it's finished I will be able to share with the world, but right now i have to respect his wishes.
I believe when done it will be magazine worthy and so will the wagon for that fact as it's never been done to a Gran Torino wagon like i'm building.
Hoping to make my mark again. I already have one of my builds in several magazines but that was built at my old shop in Florida but that was over 10 yrs ago and you have to keep building stuff to keep yourself in the spotlight or be forgotten about
