Hi it could also be the timing chain.. pull a valve cover and see if the valves move if they don't then most likely chain is broken.
FYI
sometimes the cam lobe the points run on can get gummed up and cause the points to jump around causing a miss.

Remove the distributor and replace the stripped gear.

Car backfired when on the gas I let up then ran fine. Finally just died And couldn't get it running again. Now the distributer doesn't turn what is my next move.
