Re: Shorter oil filter?

There are a large number of smaller/shorter filters that will screw onto a small block Ford. You can even use a Purolator L10241 (and its cross references), which is VERY common, and fits all sorts of import cars, and even my riding lawn mower. The Dodge filter, a Fram PH16 (and its cross references) is the same diameter as a Ford filter, but shorter.

Good Luck

Re: Shorter oil filter?

I have used the shorter filters if required and no issues. I believe with the regular changes the decreased filter area is of no issue . Go for it .
On one of my cars I use the K+N HP-3001 but I have to cut the nut off the bottom before fitting. But it allows me to use the longer filter

Re: Shorter oil filter?

Thanks Tim, my thinking exactly. Car is used for pleasure and mostly attending events. Driven maybe 3k miles annually. i use synthetic and change the oil every 3000 miles. I think i have decided to go this route..

Re: Shorter oil filter?

If you're changing the oil every 3-6000 miles the shorter filter is fine, it's all the same specs internally other than less filter area due to the shorter pleated paper inside. If you go long periods between oil changes such as with synthetic oil, you may want to consider changing the filter ever so often and dumping in an extra half quart of oil. Once again that's not necessary if you change every 3-6000 miles.

Shorter oil filter?

Hi, I have a 65 Falcon Ranchero with a 302, Edelbrock Aluminum Heads, a cam and some other goodies. I believe it has a high velocity oil pump. My issue is I just had to replace the power steering pump and the lines connect slightly different and are too close to the oil filter. That means every time I change the oil, I will be in for bleeding the power steering (no thanks). The way I see it, I have two options:

1. Shorter oil filter. I have a K&N HP3001 on it now and it is just under 6 inches long. Motorcraft has an FL300 that is 4.2 inches and Fram and Wix have selections between 3.6 and 4 inches long
Does a shorter oil filter potentially cause other problems, or is it OK?

2. Get a 90 degree adapter and have the filter hang straight down.

Thanks for your opinions!

Mike
