I got thinking about it and came up with a theory. I live at 6000 ft, but everything I do (go to the store, to work, the dr., etc) is "down the hill".
The last couple clutch cables have held up until I got home, meaning I could drive (down the hill) to work with no problem. On the way home, since I'm going up hill, I'm on the throttle / under load constantly for 30 minutes or so. I'm guessing that's why it gets so hot.
