Morning sickness

My fordomatic has been taking a while to shift for some time now. Checking the tranny fluid it seems there is to much. Could this cause it take a while to shift?

Re: Morning sickness

Are you checking the level before or after it is at operating temp? You might also check the vacuum line to the modulator. The rubber hose might have become deteriorated or contaminated, causing a leak.

Re: Morning sickness

I checked it when the car was warm but it is hard to read. Seemed to be above the full line. I wanted to add some transx to help smooth out the shifting temporarily but don't want to over fill it and blow a seal.

Re: Morning sickness

my money's on the rubber hose to the modulator. Like Buebird said, check it. Maybe it just popped off, or maybe it needs to be replaced. More often than not, that's the cause of the problem you describe.

Re: Morning sickness

I would stay away from trans-x. I have not used it, but I have heard all the trans guys say to stay away from it.

Check the rubber hose everyone is talking about. If there is tranny fluid in the hose, you need a new modulator. Also, make sure the other end of the rubber hose is hooked up to manifold vacuum.

Re: Morning sickness

So I checked the hose from the modulator and it was good. Could it be the modulator itself? How could I check if its bad?

Re: Morning sickness

The only way I know that a modulator can go bad is if the diaphram inside ruptures. If there is fluid in the hose, it would indicate a ruptured diaphram.

Re: Morning sickness

I can't speak for the fords but I've seen the modulator diaphram go on GM's a few times and each time the engine has sucked in tranny fluid causing the exhaust to blow lotsa blue, especially at idle.
