How much should I pay.

So a car dealer friend that I am working part time for has a ranchero on his lot that he is selling for another guy. Build date is 10/78, not sure if that makes it a 79 or not. It has a what I'm pretty sure it has the 351w and c4 tranny. On the dash there is a GT emblem but I didn't see one on the fenders. It has tach and all gauges instead of just lights. No power windows or locks but does have air conditioning. Body looks pretty darn straight except for some rust and the bottom of the rear wheels wells/rockers but not bad at all. Interior is pretty clean but the seat does have some wear and tear on the driver seat.

So what kind of price range would you think it is worth?

I would definitely look under that car. It will give you a good look at problems in the floors and any possible power train issues. The what's it worth question is hard to answer without actually seeing the car. The question is what are your plans if you bought it. What kind of budget would you have to spend on it? Are you a good body man?, mechanic?, just a lot of things to consider when pricing a car or estimating its worth. But, being a 78 model, and some rust issues, I wouldn't give more than $1500 for it. To me, there's a lot better looking body styles than that 78. But, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Re: How much should I pay.

Ya I do prefer the prior body style, the 77-79 are still nice. The goal would be a street machine/driver, hopefully a pair of turbos. I'm a fair body man, but my friend/boss would help me with any shortcomings.

$1500 is the asking price. Budget wouldn't be real high, I'm a cl, classified and swap meet shopper.

There ya go. And I certainly wasn't saying that body style is ugly. But, if you look at it and it seems sound mechanically, you would be off to a good start on a nice daily driver at that price. Kind of a driving project. Got photos? We need photos. Hahaha

Re: How much should I pay.

That is not a dent in the middle of the door just a reflection.

This is the rust, basically like this on all four corners of the rear wheel arches. But it only goes up about 5"

Needs a good cleaning, but pretty decent.

I noticed some small dents in the roof and a couple in the stainless trim, but nothing I can't handle. It is the 351w, only 6 valve cover bolts.

I am kind of leaning towards passing just because I have an old jeep cherokee already that is my project. I don't know I'm a ford guy and have always like the rancheros. Throw fuel injection, headers, hot cam a pair of turbos and an overdrive tranny at it oh what a driver it would be. Oh stupid decisions.

Re: How much should I pay.

Well Husker, that's not a bad looking car. Not sure about twin turbos , but I think with a little work it could be a nice street cruiser. There are so many parts out there for 351's . I think I would leave it carbed , check the compression, and add some bolt on goodies, like intake , cam, and fresh carb and let it eat till it needs rebuilding. Good luck on the deal, and I would say worth $1500

Re: How much should I pay.

I've been trying to talk them down, I know the owner that he is trying to sell it for. The story goes that he gave $1500 for it just a month or so ago, not sure why he bought it or why he is selling it. He already has a garage full of probably over a million dollars worth of restored/hot rodded muscle cars. I think he has plenty of money and just hates to see good old cars go to waste so he buys them up, restores them and the tries to resale, maybe thought the market wasn't strong enough on this one to justify spending the money on it or something. Even when you are rich you can't make to many bad business decisions.

I would like to get him down to $1000, if it sells to someone else it sells to someone else.
