gas tank filler cap

hi i have a question, should the gas cap be vented, when i remove the cap, it is under pressure, lots, so much that if the tank is 3/4 full if i take off gas sprays out and i get soaked, cap has a vent in it which allows air into the tank but not out. is this correct, its a 67 ranchero . i also replaced gauge sending unit, no leaks, untill it sits in shop for a day, air pressure builds up in tank then drip drip drip grrrrrrrrr any ideas,??????

Depends on whether the tank has a vent or not. Early falcons till about 63 had a vent and a non-vented cap. then 64 and 65 ford eliminated the vent and went to a vented cap. That's why you see gas stains down the side below the cap on 64 to at least 66 rancheros. Don't know when ford brought back the vent. Might take some investigation to know if yours has a vent or not. With no vent you absolutely need a vented cap.

If yours is under pressure when you remove the cap, either it has a vent and it's plugged and a non-vented cap. Or it has no vent.

Re: gas tank filler cap

I have a 67 Ranchero. It does not have a vented system. I posted on here some time ago a billet fuel cap install. I had to vent it clear down to the outside lower inboard fender panel. Just venting it inside the fender put gas fumes inside the cab.
